Was out hunting in the rain storm last week in the evening. Got a little too windy so went on the ground below my stand. About 5:00pm a buck came trotting down a logging road.He cut in the woods about 20 yrds. Looked like I hit him good but either the rain washed the blood,or the "RAGE" broadheads I'm using didn't get good penetration. Found my arrow there was about 4 inches dangling off the shaft with the broadhead attached. Found no blood.

My father went out this weekend and found my buck about 75 yrds from where I shot. Small 6pt. A couple of vulchers flew off it. He said it was a good shot in the heart area.Right behind the shoulder.

I know how some people feel about the broadheads, what do you think???

IMHO if that deer was only 75 yards from where you shot you did not search to well. No matter what BH you use if the deer dropped that fast it did its job.

No blood w/ a heart shot

how about you go back and read what you just wrote. The deer was dead 75 yards away. It was raining. Water washes blood away?

tired of hearing crap about these BH's

How hard did you look for him

Only 75 yards sounds like the head did it's job but you dropped the ball and gave up way to soon
I'm guessing here but it would seem your a youngster and this is close to your first time out hunting, but you need to spend some serious time looking for an animal after you shoot it, it is a commitment you make the second you enter the woods with a weapon.

It's very disapointing to hear stories like this.  75 yards away from your shot should have been covered in even a minimal search.  The problem is not the broadhead.

Did you tag it or call F&G about trying to keep the antlers?

That's alright I could take the heat. I took the time to look. Father said he was piled up behind a downed tree.I guess you could overlook certain areas in a rain storm and when its getting dark.

True....but you should have went back the following day when it was light and not raining.  Hopefully lesson learned.

monsterbuks it sounds like you just needed to put more time in. If you knew you made a good hit it wouldnt even matter if the blade opened or not. Field points kill animals. If it was raining your probably not going to have good blood or any.

Just remember once you decide to let an arrow fly that animal becomes your responsibility to recover

yea im also in high school, but i get out at noon. ive gone out and looked for deer before school in the morning though
Posted:  02 Nov 2008 9:52 AM
I have never heard any problems with the 2 blade rage heads. A deer running 75 yards is no doubt not far at all and means you probably made a really good shot. I've heard of deer being shot bad with the Rage heads and not even going 75 yards. You can never give up on a deer. Always search hard. Glad he was found though

If you plow a deer through the heart- you will get GREAT blood at first, then very little.

Usually, a deer will travel further on a heart shot then a lung shot. So, I believe him.

If you happen to be wrong about the location of impact and initial travel, but stumbled across blood a little ways away, after a heart shot- blood will be minimal.

I prefer to shoot them. Hitting them with the plow wastes an awful lot of meat.

Yes, but so tender...

I do think there should be a separate season for plows.  They definately are NOT archery equipment and are more like a gun.  We should call them "plowguns".
