I would post a photo, but am stumped on how to?  Help out there please ?
Where's your photo? On your computer?

I'd like to stress what s1h1a1m1u1 (what the heck does that mean? ) said. Be honest with yourself when picking a dog. As he told Skyline that a big part of the dogs life would be family pet, you should be sure of what you want. Deep Run also picks the pup from the litter for you, using your requests. If you tell the breeder you want a dog for nothing but hard hunting and competing, you may get a pup that is more aloof to people. It happens, people make that mistake.

It also helps to get your deposit down early on a planned litter, so you get first pick ... either if you pick or they pick for you.

Good luck.

i have a black lab 2 years old. Let me tell you the best companion ever. Also, a great dog with the kids.

I have a black lab, 3 1/2 years old and agree with the above comment 100%. AWSOME DOG!

I got mine from a breader right here in central NJ who only breads labs. They also have training classes you can take and board dogs they sell when you go on vacation without them.

East Coast Kennels is their name, Tony and Lisa Arpaia.

Champ a sire on their home page is the brother to my dog "Gunner".

If you need more infor, PM me or email me bellow.

Thought about a dog myself. I think you are smart to plan a year out. Get some books or info on training and read 'em. That way you will already know what to do in training situations. You have to train the family too from what I read. No goodies unless it's part of the training, no loud yelling, definitely no hitting etc. I learned a bit just reading magazines. I would defintely get some books and read up more before getting the hunting dog.

B3leive it or not i was playing with the idea. I dont know anything about them, like temprament, trainability, how they would do in the summer here, excersise differences between them and labs, shedding, etc.  basically i dont know if they would be a better, worse, or equal choice than a lab.  can anyone volunteer any info on these dogs?

CHECK OUT WWW.RESCUEFORLIFE.ORG.
It is a lab Rescue ONLY PURE BREEDS NO MUTS/MXS

Both my labs came from this rescue WOMEN IS EXCELLENT! DOGS NEEDED MINIMUL WORK FOR UPLANDS. Trained my dogs to Point, instead of flush.
Dogs work great with both waterfowl, and upland.
and most of the dogs come with papers!
so you don't have to spend several hundred dollars for a dog from a breeder.
Just check out the website, and if you want to pm a contact number, i will answer all your questions the best I can.

i own a chessie and love it...i was in the same boat as you and not knowing about them....i was told they are aggressive hard headed, and hard to train...i have not seen that at all.  they shed 2 times a year, in mainly clumps.  they work fine in the summer you just can go all out, well at least i did not. Alot of people say labs are easier to train but i have never trained a lab.  I have 3 nephews and the dog is great around them they can just walk in the house and he is fine...but when looking for a dog especially if you are using it for hunting, do research on the breeder the best you can. if they are not willing to talk to you about certain things move on.  when i went to look at my breeder she let me walk in the kennels with any dog i wanted all had great temperments....do the research i will make life easier later on...find what dog you like best chessie, lab or anything else, a little training goes a long way....I used the book Retrievers form the inside out....book was very help full. any questions fell free to ask.

Do you use your chessie for hunting?  I read that chessies are hard to train, and do not unconditionally obey/retrieve like a lab. any truth to that in your experience?  Do you have problems with barking/strangers?  Is he/she destructive? thanks

I've got a chessie pup and she's great.  They do tend to be more protective than labs, which i like.  They are not harder to train than a lab, just different.  If you do a lot of waterfowl hunting, they can't be beat.  They also do well at upland, but the water is their element.

Like bigmike said, do a lot of research before picking your dog, both on the breed and the breeder.

Are there any chessie breeders in the area?

my dog barks when people walk in front of the house, the dog is not destructive at all...i have trained mine myself and he is doing great, but i have yet to hunt with him...never trained before but i can see tons of progress its a great feeling....i got my dog from Red Lion Kennels in south hampton...www.redlionkennel.com...she has both labs and chessie.  nice lady, and she is always happy to show you her dogs...they are sometimes expensive from her but i am happy i went with her, she is nothing but helpful to me...she has older dogs to, some already trained, not sure what you are looking for.

My chessie also is not destructive.  she is actually pretty calm in the house, but she needs and gets a lot of excercise outside.

Mine came from Md, but i was told to check out Red Lion Kennels when I was looking.  Also, silvercreek cbr's in North Jersey.

A friend of mine got his chocolate there.  She's fantastic in the field and a great looking dog.  If I wanted a lab, I would definitely take a look at their dogs.

look around if you dont care about seeing the dog there are plenty of breeders out there that will ship the dogs....good luck

ill third deep run retrievers. ive had labs all my life and the one i purchased almost two years ago is by far the best trained pup i've had.  they work with the pups right from birth, i was very impressed with the place.

Haha, you guys will get a kick outta this:

I was on my break from work, and i went to the pet store next door to get some feeder fish.  while waiting, i was looking through some dog books.  the girl caught me reading about chessies, and was like oh we have one here, but hes at the vet now (id never buy a dog, hunting or otherwise at a pet store).  i said oh cool or something equally indifferent.  she then tells me stuff i know like "oh they are really good at retrieving (really?? lol)  and they were bred for retrieving ducks in icy water."  now here comes the kicker, "not that youd need a dog to retrieve ducks from icy water, but thats what they used to use them for"  i just smiled and paid.  i did not need to get into a debate on dog use and ethics with a hippie pet store clerk lol
