NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / General Comments & Information / Why do you think you haven't harvested a deer yet?
Posted:  20 Aug 2008 11:44 AM
Is it....

Time?
Area?
Knowledge?
Deer (buck or Doe) fever?
Patients?

What is it? I think this thread will help some who have yet to harvest deer!

As for me, when I was younger, I could not stop moving or fidgeting while on stand or on the ground.  I had everything else on lock, but the above mentioned.  Once I learned to be patient control my self by listening, slowing my breathing, I began to see and hear deer.  As a seasoned hunter I know it is tough sitting in a tree for hours without seeing a tail that i did not create!  You all know what I'm talking about, the deer that you saw from the stand but it ended up being a tree or rock formation. lolol

What is it, explain?

Dsaint, You nailed it. It is hard when just starting off hunting. More so if you don't have someone to show you the ropes. Timing can kill a hunt just as it can make it  a memory that will last a life time. Learn from the woods and the animals that live there. Slow down, smell the flowers and watch the World open up.

True, area (patterning)is your problem!  Do you scout often or try and keep a tab on the deer herd in your area!  Man, I just wish I had the time scout more

That comes with experience, and learning to read the signs that deer leave behind.

Scouting from February through August will give you an excellent idea of where the deer are, where they go, their travel routes, food sources, bedding areas etc...

Keep a journal of your finds(trails, rubs, scrapes, thickets etc..), plot them out on a map of your hunting area. Over time, the total picture will emerge. Deer are generally habitual, they keep the same travel routes, same food sources and bedding areas from year to year. Their patterns do change, but not drastically.

Once you have that total picture, you can select your stand placements to give you the greatest opportunity. You will see deer on every sit, and have shot opportunities regularly. You may not find that giant wall hanger, but there will always be meat on the table!

that is why they now have trail cams. if You don't have one you can use a piece of sewing thread to make a trail marker. when the deer walk in to it, it will show the way they are moving... You can also rack up the ground so when they walk they will leave a trail.

Scouting is a big key to taking any game you hunt.

that is 100 % true. I attribute all of my success in the woods to the fact my old man started taking me in the the woods around the age of 8. I obviously didn't see to many deers at that age, only when they ran from me spooking them . 27 years later, i benefit from all of my past experiences and teaching. I the deers show me every year that i still have a lot to learn.

So for anyone new to hunting, i definitely recommend to find someone who will take you under there wing for a while.

So now tell me red what hinders you in this situation to use it as an excuse?

If your on a UBNJ property shouldn't there be deer? Whats wrong with the afternoons?

Heres where your woodsmanship comes in to get you close to a deer to present your shot. Then you have to have your marksmen ship skills in line but the biggest of all when the shot presents itself is emotions.

Emotions is the key to be calm to shoot acurately. You can talk yourself into a mis or you can talk yourself into a kill if you don't break form and are presented with a good shot or you could screw it up because you didn't see the twig in front of the animals chest. We can't teach you the emotional awarness part you have to master that in preparation to shoot and kill an animal.

Do you stump shoot or shoot at other live animals? That all helps.

Great points by all!

Theres only a few reasons as I see it to boil it down maybe a couple more.

No shot
Missed shot
Didn't go out
No place to hunt
Wife won't let me go
Have to work and can't get off
Animals all ran away in my area
I really don't have the heart to kill or wound with an arrow because theres always gun season, boom and brown and down and then sawem up.

Maybe we should ask those who haven't harvested a deer yet how many shots were you able to get in those days you were able to get out? Then narrow down to better assist you.

Because I haven't gotten off my horse yet and into the blind! But I am ready!!!

I bet he's smoking on stand. am I right.

It tokk me more than a few years to harvest my fist. I used to still hunt and stalk. Came close but no meat.  My wife bought me a tree stand for my B-day one year, I gave up smoking and Voila. Got my first one. Someone posted in another thread once you get your first one the rest will follow. And I beleive this. You need confidence but most of all you need to learn to be still, and hunt the wind.

Nope...

I could if I wanted to, the deer always come from my left and the wind is in my face so they wouldn't smell me til they go behind me....

I agree, More so now since I had my Heart Surgery. That is why You take your time in stand, if you must move move slowly. But we also need more mentors & help bring them in to hunting.

Hang in there red65 it'll come. I beleive there is alot of luck involved also (right place right time). Last year I got my first with the bow and it took till extended season to get a BB. I saw alot of deer just not in range or got busted by scent or moving a couple of times. One shot one deer. Be patient and have fun!
Good luck this season!

When I was young and waiting for my first deer I was afraid, afraid of taking a bad shot, afraid of missing, and with the shotgun/rifle afraid of shooting a doe by accident, so much so I checked the antlers over and over, my Dad re-inforced the safety and ethics of hunting over and over, not a bad thing, just made it hard for me to take the shot, it comes down to experience and confidence, once you have them you will find success.

I didn't start deer hunting until I was around 40.  No mentors, just read everything I coudl and spent a fari about of time in the woods scouting.  Also, I started with a bow and do the vast majority of my deer hunting with it.  This has forced me to read sign, minimize scent and learn to be as motionless as possible while on stand.  The woodsmanship will come with time.  Scent control and eliminating noise and movement is something you'll learn after you bust a few deer.  I still remember my boys telling me after one of their first hunts "when you said we couldn't move, you really meant it!"  I was always able to put them onto deer, but it took them years to stop busting them.

In no way do I have everything covered, but I do know what to expect...

You seem to be talking down to those that haven't taken a deer, I don't know I could be wrong..
