NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Safety Harness - your thoughts?
Posted:  20 Aug 2008 8:27 AM
I try not to but sometimes I fall asleep in my tree. This is scary when I do not have a harness on and I am thinking about getting the Hunter Safety System because it looks like it is the only one large enough. I cannot squeeze into the cheap ones that come with tree stands. Any thoughts?

I sleep in the tree all the time. My Harness is just a back up. I use the Summit Cargo straps as a seat belt and simply strap myself to the stand and sleep away. Un-strapping when a deer approaches is a snap with extremely little movement, and no noise. Try it out this season.

Answer: use a full body safety harness.  They are adjustable for different sizes.  You will find your confidence up in the stand improves too!  Always hunt safe so you can hunt another day!

Do they still make the cover-alls with the built-in harness?

I'm a ground hunter, but ...... if I were up a tree, cost would be no issue and I would buy the best system there is. Period.

Some of my natural hides have been sitting on a high rock ridge, and I've secured myself there ...  driving a spike into the ground as an anchor, etc

Don't tempt fate.

Anybody who climbs a tree to hunt and does NOT wear a harness needs to have their head examined.

Falls from a tree is the Number 1 cause of hunter related injury/death.

Stay strapped all the time, even when a deer approaches, if your focus is on the deer it is very easy to step off the stand and fall.

It is a no brainer--wear a harness, not a strap, not a rope tied to you and the tree.

Hunters Safety System
Easiest to adjust and a snap to get into.
Posted:  20 Aug 2008 12:30 PM
I started using the Hunter Safety System last year.  It's very comfortable.  Ive caught myself napping a few times too, just gives you extra confidence.  I actually like the pockets more than the ones on my jacket.

skullcrusher pm me your address and I'll send you a harness free, I purchased 6 stands last year from Walmart at the end of the season at a discount and each stand had a harness in it.

Hunter safety safety system is by far the best BUT....I have the pro series.  It is made of a breathable mesh and everything gets stuck on it.  Sometimes it gets snagged on the stand,  one time last year I had a buck coming in and I got my release stuck on it.  I couldnt get it out, my hand and release got stuck in the pocket.  If I was to go back, I would not get the mesh one again,  Id get the reverseable one...Camo to orange

Please Please Please get yourself a harness...especially since you have a tendency to fall asleep on stand.  Too many hunters die each year because they are not strapped to the tree.  You cant put a price on safety

You have to wear a safety harness at all times....try the Pro Series Hunter Safety System since they run on the larger side.

I'm with MS22.  You absolutely need to wear a harness.  Which one is less important than wearing one rather than nothing.  Stuff happens.  Needing friends or relatives to find you with a broken neck at the bottom of a tree is no way to treat people you care about.

Sleeping advice - I have reached an age that the mind is willing to get up two hours early and spend all day in a tree, but the body doesn't handle it like it did 6 years ago.  I have found that it is better for me to give up trying to stop dozing and just give in to the fatigue.  Cinch up the harness, hang the bow or gun on a tree hook and get a good nap for 20-30 minutes.  I always feeel better and have never needed a second nap.  Word to the wise - I'm also mature enough now to concede that deer just might walk by me without waking me up.  That's okay, there will be more.

I have a bunch of extra class D harnesses. Full body. If you cant or dont want to pay for an $80 Hunters Safety System vest, let me know- you can have as many of my extra class Ds as you need for free.

Wow! We've got an incredible bunch of hunters in this thread and on these forums. I really appreciate everyone's responses and genuine concern for each others safety. I am not stupid, I have an MBA as a matter of fact, but I still can't explain why I don't wear one. Lazy? Fearless? I don't know. When in Illinois last year, the outfitter required that we wear a harness and I always took it off on the way to the stand. The year before I fell out of a ladder stand from about 15 feet and landed on my hunting buddy's back. If he hadn't been there to brace my fall, then what?

Anyone that is 3XL or 4XL have the Hunter Safety System Pro Series harness? It says it is good up to 60" chest but I am 62". All things equal, I am just wondering if it runs large or small. Anyone know?
