I was looking at some white and pin oaks in Zone 10 and did not see many acorns.  How is everyone's mast looking this year?

Horrible. I have almost nothing on 8 oaks in my yard.

In the end, it's the "HUNTER" that gets the deer not the BOW !
The bowman, to be successful as a hunter, must learn to perfection the habits of his game.
NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF BOW HE USES !

this might be the year to try acorns in a bag...
http://www.wildgameinnovations.com/products/acorn-rage.html

a shortage of the real thing should bring the deer in to the bait like a magnet!

Nada, squanto Just a few 1/4" dropped so far, found one tree that dropped 3/4" and the deer are there at dawn and dusk. Hide the shrubs they are doomed. Hickory looks OK so sit there you baiters

You think we have bear problems now???

With an apparent non-existant acorn crop, just wait until hyperphasia (pre-hibernation feasting) kicks in! White oak acorns are one of the black bear's most important food sources, which they hit hard before hibernation for their high fat caloric content. An acorn shortage is sure to send the bears elsewhere looking for alternative pre-denning food source(s).

It's going to be a long fall season!

Here's a great article that pretty much sums up the importance of acorns in the North American woods:

The gypsy moths did a job on the oak trees in zone 18 also. And there's not alot of them to begin with

You're absolutely right, if you are experiencing a bad acorn crop.

I'm seeing a decent acorn crop, not as good as years past, but the deer are hitting those areas.

Found some good white oak acorns?

Plant some of them where you think a tree will do well / isn't already crowded out   In 30 years someone will be hunting near it and thank you.

Bury the acorn about twice its length under the ground (so a 3/4 inch acorn should be in a hole ~1.5 inches deep).

With so many invasive species of trees the oaks need a helping hand every once in a while

Check this out - very neat and GREAT pictures of oak tree leaves:

I have all them in my area. Some of the trees will be turned in to bows in a few years.... Great link, BTW

Poor crop in zones 5, 6, and 8 this year. Last year I had acorns ankle deep by this time. I see none in the trees this year. I had two apple trees near one stand site that the deer rarely touched till late september. Both those trees have been stripped of all fruit accessible to the deer. It's going to be a tough year

I was in Hunterdon County yesterday a spotted a nice White Oak along a field edge but my excitement ended quickly as there didn't appear to be one single acorn on it.
