Do you know what it is to be a true Human? Does it just stop when we are old enuff to hunt, drive,  get married? Or do we stop when there is kids around doing something good?

Hell to all that, kids are on the big 3-D range, get them off, they need a kids range… What the hell is all that? Can't we not fight and bitch about how someone hunts, or want to hunt? Does everyone need to only use a wheelie bow and not a Traditional bow? Is it really that hard to let others enjoy something as sweet as hunting or Archery?

Where does it stop? Someone please tell me. I love Traditional Archery so much I'm going to try a make a living with it. Will I still help others out? You bet… Will I start to dog ppl that use wheelie bows? Sure that is just me and everyone knows I'm playing. Will I kick a kid for using a wheelie bow? NOT ON YOUR LIFE. Why?

Because it's not right. To those without kids. When was the last time to helped a kid? You know Your Brother or Sisters kids need help with homework. Making something for School. How about this bad thing, Take the to a 3-D shoot and let them pick the bow they want to shoot.

Last month I sold a bow to a friend for his little girl, The whole day was hearing her ask if she could shoot some more & when are they coming back to shoot again. The Smile on Her face made me melt. On another site there is PPL that make bows to give to kids, There is some that go out a buy bows and refinish them and hand them over to some luck kid.

What is this World coming to? I mean. Give a kid the chance to learn how to shoot Archery gear, Firearms, Fishing and You just might save their life one day. I know... I know... what the hell kind of POT am I smoking... (the really good stuff) Giving a kid a bow, a firearm or even a fishing rod. Why on Earth would I do that, SAL? Well, I'll tell you why You should.

1) helps to keep the kids off the streets
2) help them find their place in Nature
3) Builds self-esteem
4) Builds self-confidence
5) Teaches them why we need to hunt & fish, not just to kill, but to let others live.

What would you tell someone 50 years from now when you hear them say? WOW, My dad said there use to be deer running in these woods, or My Mom told me She hooked a 5# bass in this Lake. Then You look at them and say.. That was because we had hunters & Fishing people that knew how to take care of the game. We do it by helping kids learn. We need to do more of that.

My hats off to all who teaches a kid how to shoot, fish, track, skin & be there for the Wildlife that we LOVE.

If You want to bitch at me, that's fine. If You want to kick my Ass, I'm right here. I will Tell you this, If You pick on kids for learning or trying Archery, Firearms, Fishing, Trapping & anything that deals with the out Doors. WE WILL BE AT WAR & You Will lose.

Great post!

I still use an ancient Jennings bow, but I have 3 newer Browning youth bows that my kids used, and now my nieces and nephews use.

Same in my gun cabinets, more youth firearms than adult ... same reason. A Remington Youth Lt-20 1100 is best investment I ever made.

I'm about to lay down big bucks for a Rem700 .243 and scope. Not for me, but my young nieces and nephews as I teach them deer huninting in Pennsylvania.

Marksmanship, scouting/tracking/stalking, cleaning of game, fair chase .....

Our kids are everything.

Because they haven't realized that any jackass can hit a bullseye.  They don't understand the meaning of sportsmanship; they're arrogant, self-centered immature bastards who think they are far better than they are.  If the conditions aren't just so, they can't shine and if they don't shine; they're not having fun.  Funny thing is that the best come through under any condition.  Bottom line is that they haven't reached that point in their life when they realize that their personal skill level doesn't mean spit in the whole scheme of things.

Well said Mystic.

Kids always get a break at The Chumbucket. I give more rods, snapper zappers, etc to small kids than you could imagine. But they are the future of the outdoors. I didn't mention this to make me look good, heck it cost me money. LOL. But thats how I learned.. people giving to me, you gotta give back.

These are the quotes that got me to do this thread.

O, You can. When you see a kid at a shoot, fishing or trapping & you know you can help them.... HELP them. If you have kid(s) and their school does archery, try and make it there to lend a hand. Maybe you can take some kids that only has 1 parent that doesn't hunt, fish or trap. See if you can take them with you to teach them what the Great Spirit gave Us & how to keep for others to enjoy.

Only mice think of themselves first. We are not the end, but the beginning. We have to start kids in the right way of things. Look at how many kids are on the News, stealing, killing SELLING. This is not the way it should be, so why not help?

Can it be we are doing what peta wants? Could be. If we dog kids for shooting long bow at the age of 4 & up, are we doing good by them? NO.
Should we just give a kid a bow or gun and let them learn on their own? NO way, they need to learn the right way.

I didn't grow up knowing my dad. I had a older brother, but he was only 1.5 years older then me. Did he teach me to fish? NO it was a family friend that did.
Did they help me to HUNT? No, that I had to learn by myself and from watching TV. Fred Bear, was the main one on TV at that time, but now we have 100's of shows on TV to help. BUt is that still a good idea? to a point. Nothing like hands on. Help a KID that is our main goal.

Thanx for the vent....

Great post I have two daughters and the oldest is 8 and wants to shoot a bow like dad. I will be getting her a bow soon and looking foward to teaching her to shoot. If she wants to hunt with a bow great if not that's ok too. She loves to fish also.

Sal, Great post. I belong to the Appalatcianbowmen, (currently on leave for school) and couldn't agree with you more.

I'll admit I have little patiants for mis behaved kids, but those kids on the ranges are the best behaved kids I've ever seen! all say yes sir or no sir. All that comes from good up bringing.

And they are welcome to shoot as many arrows they want to

Excellent post, Sal!!  Kids are our future no matter which sport they learn and which bow, gun or rod they need to help them enjoy that particular sport, as well.

I was at the shoot today with my nephew.  We shot just the 2nd range (and the disks and rabbits).  We both shoot trad and had to look for arrows, but no one bitched us out.  In fact, we were generally zipping thru there faster than the guys with wheels and rangefinders.

I guess I am glad I didn't hear any of that nonsense.  The guys we kept bumping into (those in front and those behind) were pretty cool about the whole thing and impressed that my 12 YO nephew could hit anything without a site.

Obviously, I agree that parents, neighbors, aunts and uncles who hunt, fish, camp or shoot have an obligation to at least introduce kids to their sport.   Maybe the kid will LIKE it.

My nephew was not very sure he could kill an animal first time I took him hunting.  But the smile on his face when he made his first kill (nothing big, just a squirrel) spoke volumes.  He cleaned it himself with a little help and he ate squirrel that night while the rest of his family ate pizza.

If I may go off on a little tangent, what ever happened to Boy Scouts?  Not only do I never see or hear anything about them any more, but the last group of scouts I saw was while hiking in the White Mountains about 10 years ago.  They booked a lodge on Haystack to stay in.

What ever happened to camping?  A cabin takes no skill set to use.  It teaches nothing.  What's the value taught or learned?  Maybe I am just old.  When I was in BSA we camped in a pup tent or slept in a bed roll under a tarp.  Not a cabin or a tent bigger than most college dorm rooms.

Anyway, if anyone wonders why we're losing numbers maybe this is part of the problem.  We are not raising a nation of active, healthy, bold children.

But we are raising good consumers.

Off my soapbox now.

mystic, I agree with you. It's very important to spend time with kids and teach them. I learned the outdoors on my own. My father took off when I was about 5. I'm 46yrs old and have two boys 14/18. I spent all my time with them as I should have. My 18 year old is leaving for the air force in nov. He is my fishing buddy and I will miss him. My 14 year old is my hunting buddy. As always I will spend as much time with him as I can. He just made eagle scout. He wants to be like his old man, a marine. I told him to be himself and be happy.
