NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Bear / Bear killed by Homeowner in Freedon
Posted:  14 Aug 2008 7:18 PM
Reported in the NJ Hearald, A homeowner confronted a 200 pound sow in his garage and shot the bear with a .40 cal handgun. The wounded bear escaped through a window, and its carcass was recovered approximately 50 yards from the home. The same bear had twice before broken into the garage causing nearly $3,000 in damages. The State erected a culvert trap, but the sow avoided the trap.

No info on whether the state will take any action. I hope not

Bears continue to raise concerns

By BRUCE A. SCRUTON

bscruton@njherald.com

A Fredon homeowner shot a bear moments after it charged him when he opened the door to his garage, the fourth day in a row he said the animal entered the garage.

Joe Pensado, who lives in the central part of town, said he fired one shot from his licensed .40 caliber handgun. The bear climbed out the window in the garage door and ran off into the woods.

The next day, Pensado said he found the untagged female bear dead in the woods, about 50 yards from the house.

A brief synopsis of the July 17 incident, along with the deaths of three other bears and a score of serious bear-related incidents, was included in the monthly report presented Tuesday to the state Fish and Game Council.

The shooting capped a tense evening in which the bear also charged Pensado and his 3-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter when they were in the driveway.

"We were shooting hoops and she bluff-charged at us," he said. "She wanted down that driveway toward her food source and she didn't want us around."

After getting his children and himself inside, Pensado said he watched the bear enter and leave a state-set culvert trap several times "but never set it off. She ate all the bacon and other stuff leading up to the trap, but never the bait hanging inside," he said.

The bear, later determined to be a 4-year-old female who apparently had no cubs with her, jumped into the back of Pensado's pick-up truck, grabbed a box of broken glass and began picking through it, looking for food scraps.

According to Pensado's account, the bear got into the garage July 14, apparently by lifting one of the unlocked doors and walking in. That day, the animal left behind a mess when it ripped open garbage stored there.

After the bear got in a second time, "I figured it was time to start locking the doors," Pensado said. "Wrong idea. The third night, the bear "crashed through" one door on its way in and broke through the other garage door on its way out.

"I've got $3,000 worth of damage from that night," he said.

Pensado said he had begun wearing his licensed handgun while around the house because of the bear's new habits "but the last thing I wanted to do was take her life."

During the reporting period, state wildlife technicians killed two marauding bears in neighboring Hampton, one June 25 and the other July 9. Both animals were identified as bears that had been breaking into garages.

The fourth bear killed, according to the monthly reports, was in West Milford, where it also had been captured in a culvert trap set in response to attempted home entries.

The reports also notes another bear was shot at close range by a state park police officer at Worthington State Forest after the animal chased people away from a picnic table then ate their food.

The report, which covers the period of June 21 to July 20, notes there were a total of 386 bear calls, compared with 258 calls from the same period in 2007, an increase of 50 percent.

Of those calls, 23 were considered category I, or serious, bear complaints. That category includes close encounters with humans, even if no injury occurs, entering a house, serious property damage or killing livestock. In 2007, the same period produced 12 such calls.

Category II bears are those considered to be a nuisance, such as rummaging through unsecured garbage, looking around a campsite, minor property damage or a provoked dog attack, while category III are those incidents where people report seeing a bear, an animal is found dead or injured or it raids a bird feeder.

There were 214 category II calls, compared to 121 in 2007 (a 77 percent increase) and 149 category III calls, compared with 125 from the year before (a 20 percent increase).

This year, the black bear unit reports it has destroyed or euthanized 15 bears compared with 12 for the same period last year.

Not in a case of self defense.  Also, it's not mentioned in this story but the homeowner is a cop.

What the hell is wrong with Corzine? How can he read this stuff and not want to act? Why is he so anti-hunting?

Is it orders from Karla Katz?

Does he despise his rural upbringing?

Opening up the hunt is a no brainer.. I enjoy seeing the bears around my house but there are just too many for the open space available. Not to mention they just are not afraid of humans any more. They walk down the middle of my road in the middle of the day..

A friend of mine who lives in Green Township had two sheep and a goat killed recently.  State got tired of trying to catch the bear in their trap and told the guy to shoot any bear that got in the pen.

They were just following DEP suggestions:

Time for ANOTHER idea?

make sure each and every one of these serious incidents is reported to the state. The more reports the better
