It depends on your police dept.  They send the two letters out to your references, they send stuff to the state police and when they get it all back they contact you.

My dept is pretty quick but I have heard of some that drag it out.  After seven weeks, I would contact them to see what the delay is.

MY PD states in the application cover letter 8 weeks. And, for some reason, that is how long it takes them in my experiences.

If you already have the gun then you do not need a FID to hunt or shoot the gun.

Call the police department and check on the status.  Many PD's can get the NJ FPID done in or about 30 days.  Others delay as long as they can.  Call and check.  Keep on them.  Be polite but persistent.

Since you said NJ you basically are screwed.  You must get a NJ FPID to take ownership.

If you purchased it out of state you would be good to go.  No NJ FPID required to transport or possess.

After you get your NJ FPID you can simply fill out a Certificate of Eligibility and complete the transfer.

Catch22, if you need to buy ammo for a handgun to go to the range.....

Today is 2 months for me...still waiting, but our chief told me he submitted everything to the state over a month ago and will issue the FID as soon as it comes back.  My wife just got printed and handed in her app today.  It'll be interesting to see if it she gets it exactly 2 months I get mine...

Why did he sit on it for a month?  Also, it normally does not take a month to get the paperwork back from the state.  He's lying to you.

My buddy just got his FID in Morris County. Turns out that the local Police Cheif signed the card back in July and the PD just called him to let him know it was ready last week. I don't understand why it took the PD so long to let him know it was ready...

I emailed my chief yesterday and he told me that he just received the response from NJSP.  He said the person who handles the paperwork and makes up the cards is out the rest of the week, but will probably get it done early next week.  Unfortunately, this means I will miss out on some of the great sales at Dick's this week.

Two months and one week...and counting...

I handed my stuff in Aug 22nd.  My personal references have been contacted as has my employer.  The only issue there was my director of HR said he would not answer the question if there was any reason he thought I should not have an FID.

He told me, he does not give any opinions.  Especially since there are close to 10,000 people who work here how is he supposed to know me?

Most employeers with dedicated HR departments will refuse to answer any question other than verifying employment.  This is perfectly accepted and normal.

17 Days for an address change in Readington Township...I was very pleased with the way they handled it.

Apparently it takes the secretary in a 2/3 sq mi town at LEAST three full days to prepare an FID card after returning from vacation...I'm still waiting and hoping it'll be ready before this weekend so I can have it for the VF Gun Show.

Here's a question for you guys - the form sent to my referrals asked them to state MY purpose for wanting an FID card.  Is this even legal to ask?  Suppose my referrals didn't know I was applying for a card and didn't know how to answer this line - would this disqualify me?  I was a little bothered by that being on there...

I got my FID from the Princeton Police department in 10 weeks.  My references were the slowest part of the process.

Mine is ready, now I just have to bang half a day out of work to get it.

It seems like there is a constant flow of us getting FIDs which also means getting guns.  Does NJ report statistics of percentage of residents who have a) an FID card and b) at least one gun?  You would think we'd be large enough of a voting block to vote OUT the people who make the tough restrictions...and who block us from getting CCWs...
