I NEED to make a career change and have been working on Radiology Tech. and on a waiting list. Been thinking about starting on a teaching degree while I'm waiting and see if I like it or not. I would like to hear the pros and cons from teachers them selves. Seems like the counslers make anything sound good. Thanks for your input. Send PM if that's better for you.

It is a great career with moderate pay and a host of different specialties available. You have to be really responsive to people, you have to love kids, and you need to take direction well. Be positive....don't let the negative nellies get to you. Be a company man or women. Always remember, you work for the parents....the tax payers. A good teacher is worth their weight in gold. The real pay back is in the relationships that you will have with the students, their families and your colleagues.
Also, you have to be able to listen to all the stick in the mud, bitter conservatives on this site call you lazy and over paid and berate you for the pension that you've earned. That is easy though.... __________________ Helping deer go up the food chain since 1979.

| The state has a program called the "Alternate Route" so you don't have to go back to school. The purpose of the program is to get real world experience into the classroom. If you have a degree in your subject area you should be eligible. That's how I got started. I worked as a wildlife/environmental biologist for years but found that I enjoyed teaching it as much as I did doing it, so now I get to do both. | ||

What age are you thinking of teaching?
What subject? Teaching is an under-appreciated job - you will be paid shite for the first 15 years and then have whining bitches complaining about your pension and health benefits that you had to sacrifice 15 years of well below market wages to get... You only get paid for 10 months of the year and have to listen to cry babies complaining that you get too much vacation - I could go on... __________________ "Rome remained free for four hundred years and Sparta eight hundred, although their citizens were armed all that time; but many other states that have been disarmed have lost their liberties in less than forty years."

I think it may be a great job for a hunter.
My wife's sister's husband (my brother-inlaw-inlaw? lol) teaches at Morris Hills High School. At 2:30 every afternoon, he makes a dash for Wildcat Ridge, Farny, etc .... gets to hunt every afternoon. He has no need to hunt on Saturdays. Rarely a week goes by that there isn't some stupid holiday. We have a lot of delayed openings in the winter (10:10 am), so sometimes he will go then, in the fresh, silent snow. I'm so frigging jealous.
His day is broken in to 4 periods. He teaches two periods, one is for prep time, and the other is for lunch and interaction with the kids (or something like that). My wife and I have had a tough couple of years with health care costs with our kids. I'm super jealous of his health care benefits! lol All in all, he's happy .... and isn't under any pressures about losing his job, benefits, etc. like my wife and I are. He's an easy going guy to begin with. I won't hijack this thread with responses to the stupid comments by telefante and madeinuk. Good luck to you. Tough decisions you have, be happy that you at least have these decisions to make. My wife worked in the central office of a large school district in Essex County fresh out of college. She left for more challenging work. She's sorry she did. Shows you the sad situation America has become. __________________ We, The People, are all first responders.

I was thinking K-8 or history. I remember what some of the kids were like in high school and I don't need that. Feel like I could make a difference with the younger kids before they know it all. LOL What grade or subject do some of you teach? Thanks for the responses.

MightyHunter ....
Telefante said my remarks to you about my brother-inlaw were stupid and truely uninformed. I'm sorry if I'm wasting your time. It took 4 days for you to get just a few responses, so I thought I would chime in, to help a little bit. My brother-inlaw is also my best friend, we're both married men with children that are getting older. We talk about this stuff all the time .... life's decisions we've made down the road. And, he's the one that makes the big deal that the amount of hours he works each day, each week, each month and each year is a Godsend. Its just not hunting of course, its time needed to raise a family, at least the way families used to be raised. Its hard to put a dollar amount on time. He also stresses the benefits ... just the health care alone. Its also hard to put a dollar amount on a lifetime of piece of mind. He doesn't boast about this stuff ... we just talk about it. How things have changed. You mention know-it-all high school kids ...... he really has no problems with that. This is Morris County....there really isn't any crime, etc here. He says he has different degrees of good kids, and lazy kids .... but no trouble kids. I guess its a matter of where you teach. I guess as you move east of here, things get different. As far as being an elementary school teacher, don't let your buddies kid you about that. The Morris Hills assistant football coach that is the loudest, meanest, harshest guy on the staff .... is a K-6 teacher, in Denville I believe. People say 2nd grade, but I don't know that for fact. My point being ... having the patience, etc for little kids is a virtue, it doesn't mean you are a softy. Sorry if I wasted your time as Telefante says I did. Good luck to you. __________________ We, The People, are all first responders.

Quote: I did not say stupid....you cracked on me and madeinuk for our pointing out that people in the teaching profession face a lack of respect from certain factions of the public. (I think thats why) In my opinion your position - that madeinuk and me made "stupid" comments.....(your word pal not mine)...is an uninformed one and I stand by it.Telefante said my remarks to you about my brother-inlaw were stupid Quote: And I never said that you wasted his time!! This is what I said in response to you calling my comments stupid! This is by far one of the greatest parts of being a teacher. When my kids were younger I was always there to get them off the bus after school with my wife, I never miss one of their sporting events, and weekends are family time because I have weekday afternoons to hunt. You won't become rich as a teacher, but there is no price tag that can be put on the time spent with your family, and once those years are gone you can never bet them back. |

Easy guys no need for arguing. I expected some criticism from people on this subject as it always gets. I understand how blackduck feels (not calling someone stupid) but about the hours and the pensions that teachers get. People don't think about the stress and fustration that teachers must go through also. I'm in manufaturing right now and let me tell you it's worse than what you hear in media. Not many jobs and the ones left pay very little. So that's my main reason looking into teaching stability, good salary and a pension plan (right now I have no retirement plan) __________________ Bear Instict

I did not say stupid.... You responded ... "No....you just chimed in with your own - truely uninformed one. "
I just chimed in with my own what? Stupid comment. And, a truely uninformed one, at that, you say. Quoting telefante Your remarks implied to MightyHunter that I did hijack his thread (waste his time) with my stupid comment.
And I never said that you wasted his time!! Quoting Telefante My opening remarks were positive ones about teaching to MH. I think your opening remarks to MH were somewhat disengenuious. You state "moderate pay," but nothing about benefits. You then end with your statement of " stick in the mud, bitter conservatives on this site call you lazy and over paid and berate you for the pension that you've earned." What the hell does MH care about some people on this hunting website think about it? It sounds to me like you wanted to make this attack on people .... which is cool, but not in MH's thread. To be helpful to MH, you could have stated the details of your pension (and your other benefits, too). He's making a career choice for life, and you and Madeinuk are making comments defending your compensation package, without stating what it is. Yea, sorry, I think that was stupid and a waste of MH's time.
I never commented on anything that you said untill you called my comments stupid. What is the deal with the chip on your shoulder blackduck? I don't even understand. Your opening remarks attacked me and madeinuk and you should apologize to both of us. Check your altitude. Out of the blue you called my comments stupid. I have taught biology, chemistry and physics in a public high school for 25 years....madeinuk is a teacher too....you spend alot of time with your brother in law....who is better informed? Who is better informed ..... you and MadeinUk, or me (who has a friend that teaches)? You guys are, of course. As I stated, he wasn't getting hardly any responses over days, so I thought I might have something to offer. And, I thoght I was offering him something worthwile. You guys did not state anything about your benefits. I was kinda telling MH how my brother in-law thanks God for the benefits he gets ... how important they are these days, and how many people are losing them. Indeed, these are MH comments ... " So that's my main reason looking into teaching stability, good salary and a pension plan (right now I have no retirement plan)." Of course, that is what he is *mainly* interested in. Stability ... why didn't you tell him about tenure (as if civil service protections weren't enough). Good salary ... why didn't you give him some idea of the salary situation (its certainly improved). Pension ... why not give him some idea of it.... what you contribute, what the taxpayers contribute, and what the taxpayers guarantee your pension to be for life. And, while you are at, why not give him some input on the health benefits (dang, Telefante, how important is that!!??), sick time, tuition reimbursement, or any other things? Help the man out, instead of you guys pussy-footing around. MightHunter ... Wow ... I'm sorry about all that. Your talking about manufacturing is like fingernails across a chalkboard to me. My oldest son just completed his first year away at college for mechanical engineering, and I'm so worried about his futute job prospects, and job security. It what the boy loves, all things mechanical, how do I tear up his dreams? But, the world is changing. Find out everything you can about teaching, etc. There is a website, by one of the newspapers maybe, that lists salaries, etc for the different school districts in NJ. Even think about other government jobs. No one has done better than the public employees of NJ. As you said, things are really bad. And many people don't realize how bad. Health care costs are spiralling out of control, and it eats up people's raises, eats up people's meager retirement accounts. Check out "real salary gains" over the past decade. Its amazing to me how many of all my sons' classmates are/will be fighting for the available police positions ..... foregoing what they wanted to do in their hearts. I'm just one old guy saying that if I were a young man, I would, at least, be considereing employement in the NJ public sector. And, sadly, I tell my own sons that. Sadly ... not because there is anything wrong with being a teacher, or cop, or fireman, etc ... --- all honorable professions --- but the jobs that will make America continue to be a world leader, are leaving so quickly. If the best jobs are in government, our days of greatness are over. Good luck to you. __________________ We, The People, are all first responders.

Blackduck - your comments are all about what you get from teaching. Mine were about what you must give. If you enter the job raring to "give what it takes" you will succeed. If you enter the job and it is all about getting out early to hunt - your comment not mine - then you will fail like so many alternate route types who get in the business for that reason. Good teachers, in top flight school districts, seldom run out of the building with the students. Some applicants are even uninformed enough to mention all of the renumerations, as their reason for wanting to teach, in an interview. They never get hired. You really don't understand public school teaching - it is just not about benefits and going hunting right after school. It is about what you give, your skill, and your talent for making people feel special.
Next - you called our comments STUPID because we warned mightyhunter about the nay sayers. Indeed, in this very forum teachers have been bashed from here to Sunday and anyone going into the business needs to be ready for that. You were wrong to do that. I called your remarks UNINFORMED because you said that our comments were stupid. Your statement was, and is, uninformed. I never said that you wasted mighty's time - you inferred that, in essence, made that up. You really owe us an apology. 870 - I will take the detention because I will never take and bull from the school yard boar.
PS. dude - I used to do a Field Ecology course in summer school. I have a bus license and we worked up three sites. One was next to the school and two by the local reservoir. It was the best. You must have a great time with it. __________________ Helping deer go up the food chain since 1979.

Sounds like you guys have a good time teaching biology. That's not always a popular subject and a good way to make it interesting.
