NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Bear / 12 cubs to 1 mother bear

I wouldn't have believed it but my son,his buddy, and myself were witness to 12 cubs running across a dirt road.We were going to do some fishin and all these cubs ran in front of us.(about 20 ft)"Where's the mother?"I asked. When we couldn't see a mama bear I shouted "Roll em up!".....we counted 12 cubs. Then we saw her off to our left...a big mama(with filled utters)!!!I thought bears don't adopt other bears.... any thoughts???

Bears will "adopt" other cubs.  12 seems a little high though.  It's possible you just didn't see the other sows.

we were looking and they all followed the sow we saw.I agree maybe more than one sow.Nowhere in sight. They filed up the ridge behind the sow.Believe me,we counted 12 cubs.I'm no rocket scientist but counting to 12,I can handle.I was really baffled as to how that could be. That means in a few years those cubs are gonna be BIG right?Should the rangers be made aware?

I heard Gary Ult speak one time in the mid 80's.  The PA Game Commission would transplant bear cubs with a mother in the den who had small cubs.  They would tranqualize the mother and put vicks up her nose.  They would then add the new cub to the litter.  She never new there was a cub not her own.  12 does seem very high though.

I agree....Like I said before,I can count that high....but it seems without the bear hunt, populations are gonna explode.....12 cubs(sheesh)........anyway,I thought maybe someone here may have seen or heard about this happening.Besides I wouldn't have brought it up even if it was 4 cubs...........by the way, they were actually really cute running up the hill
