NJ Hunter / New Jersey Small Game & Waterfowl Hunting / Small Game Action / Coon Hunting Question
Posted:  05 Aug 2008 9:37 PM
Does anyone  know if it is legal to coon hunt, after dark, sitting on a corn pile, with a .22 or even a 410 and a coonlight, with NO DOG?

i get pictures of soooo many coons on my trail cam, i wanna thin the .....herd?

i cant have a dog, and now a days the properties are too small to run a dog, he will get me on someone elses property within 2 mins...

just looking for a legal way to coon hunt with no dog... maybe with a call...?

Please only post facts, i dont want to get myself in trouble with the law.. if noone knows for sure ill send F&G an email, (but they take weeks to get back to me...and usually never know the right answer themselves..)

I can identify with that.  Coons are taking up all the memory.

let a trapper help you. but you need to wait till november. with high numbers, if a rabbies or distemper starts it will wipe them all out.
.22 is out, can only use them to dispatch trapped animals, and then it's shorts only.
email f+g the question.

give a local trapper the go.

I agree email f&G and when you find out let us know because I have a really bad coon problem on my East Amwell spot.  It's really annoying sorting out 1000 pics and 600 are coons

The only way you can use a 22 at night is with a hound or trapper checking traps.  You can call but must use a shotgun not sure about a bow.  coon eating corn on a pile is not classed as damage causing, so they can only be shot or trapped in the seasons allowed.  coon causing damage may be controled at any time by lawful means of take.

Sooooo, your saying if i dont have a trap or a dog, i cannot carry a .22

how about a shotgun? 410 preferrably...

i will definately only hunt them during the season.. not at all damaging anything..

we only have 1 guy who traps in our club. the rest of us live so far from the land to check traps daily..

my dad tells me i can set a trap in an area like ours and catch a coon overnight no problem. they used to use barrel traps back in the day...

my grandpa RIP had amazing dogs and they used to go out before i was born and clean house! lol my dad says he had a silent dog (wouldnt bark on the trail), so the coon wouldnt know he was comming until too late.. had to run up the tree nearest, there was never much of a chase with that dog.. he got the job done quick..

i think the issue is hunting over bait.  im not to sure about the legality of that so you still may want to talk to someone from F&G

I happen to know an old coon hunter.  I will ask him tonight and find out what the deal is.
