NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Bear / My Letter in Star Letter 8/5/08

I wrote this in response to the Editorial last week. Specifically because I can not believe that Jackson needs expensive DNA testing to understand that New Jesey has a problem that isn't going to get better through education and bear proofing. Just the latest stall tactic to get Corzine through his first and last term as governor it seems.

Editor,

Lisa Jackson now wants to use expensive DNA testing to determine if New Jersey really has a bear problem. New York State seems to use a much simpler and cost effective method: hunting. While the average bear harvest in New York’s northern Adirondack zone has remained steady for the past 20 years, it has increased a whopping 417 percent in the southern Catskill zone, the area that borders northern New Jersey. The NY DEC attributes this increase to bears traveling freely between the two states.

Based on these statistics, it seems that the New Jersey DEP’s Comprehensive Bear Management Plan addresses everything but managing the state’s rapidly growing bear population. Unless, of course, New York hunters are killing the same bear three times.

This was in reference to Jackson's statement that they needed DNA testing to see if a three different complaints were from the same bear or three different bears.

What ever happened to tagging the problem bears?

I guess Ms Jackson has an interest in the DNA testing facility!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would agree with DNA testing only if it was done postmortem at the check in station.

DNA testing bears will be made simple soon.

All you gotta do is take a swab of the saliva off of the corpses of the pets and small children that will inevitably be killed or  maimed if something isn't done about the growing population.

Be sure to tell the home owner to get a DNA swab while the Bear is quietly rummaging through their refrigerator! " Uh, Mr.Bear, could you spit on this?" Idiots...Keep it simple stupid.Whats the cost of a dna test kit and labor involved for testing as opposed to a hunter enjoying a hunt w/ a $2 dollar bullet? (just a rough on the price guys)The Bears just haven't invaded or killed the right person yet,Give Ms jackson a DNA test kit and a rifle w/ a bullet in the chamber, put her in a room ( a small room)w/ a hungry bear w cubs and see what she'll do, then I'll be convinced.

Typical. The state budget is bankrupt but Corzine's own people don't get the cut back message and spend like we have money to throw away.
