I am buying a gun from a friend.  We both have valid FIDs and filled out Certificate of Eligibilitys.  There is no reason for us to go to the police for anything correct?

no reason at all.  you've done everything that is required.  leave the police out of it.

I agree 100% they will only make thing “unnecessarily complicated” and there is no legal reason to even mention guns to them

What kind of gun is it? As stated above you do not need the PD while you have all the paperwork in order. We still have faith in our gun owners even here in NJ
