NJ Hunter / New Jersey Hunting / How To / gravity feeder question
Posted:  31 Jul 2008 7:55 AM
I have been using a gravity feeder made out of pvc pipe with good success. Now I want to increase the capacity to save me trips to the woods just to fill the feeder. I have a 55 gal drum that I want to mount to the feeder to supply the corn. The feeder is elevated and the drum would mount ontop of the pvc. My brother just said drill holes in the drum and place it on the ground it will gravity feed out the holes anyone do this??? What are your ideas?????We use the feeders to keep the does hanging around until the rut comes on hoping to use the does as the bait for the bucks... we do not shoot the deer at the feeders as the bucks will not come into them until real late at night anyway.

i have done this for years.   you can go thru alot of corn. On my property they will empty 250lbs of corn in a week . i am switching over to Electronic feeders this year. The deer will feed all night long from a gravity feeder. very hard to pattern.  Electronic feeders can be set to go off about an hour before dark and the deer will come running when it goes off. they want to be the first ones to the corn.   the sound of that corn coming out is like ringing a dinner bell

i had same idea i think it will work with slight mod.no need to put drum on top of pvc.

Get a 5 gallon bucket, 6"X10' pvc pipe, 1 male & 1 female screw adapters & 1 end screw-in cap w/plug. Cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket and fix the screw adapters to bucket. Cut or don't cut the 10' pipe, Now just slide it in the piece on the out side of the bucket. it should be sticking straight up out of the bucket. How paint it to look like a dead tree. Now cut 4 - 2" holes around the lid part of the bucket. Take the feeder out in to the woods, Put a nice size rock in the bucket and put the lid back on ( this helps to hold the feeder up till it gets filled with feed) and fill.

took the blue 55 gal. barrel out to the woods today put 2 inch hole in the bottom and filled it with 400 lbs of corn set up the new camera on it and we will see what happens. I will try  and post pictures next week after i get back from vacation. hoping for a few good pictures I did not set the flash as it is close to a road and I don't want to give away the cameras position. Alot of local's hunt these woods and I have had stuff come up missing. Hoping that the chiggers will keep them at bay until after early season by then I will have the woods patterned and can remove the camera....

Depending on where you get your corn, thats a solid $80.00.
