I think a lot depends on how long you are going to keep them and what condition you want them to be in.Where are you getting them from?

Is it going to be a recall pen or just a holding pen?  If you just plan on keeping the quail in there, I wouldn't put more then 2 dozen and that is pushing it.  Put in a pine branch to give then some cover from each other.  It you are keeping them in there they will lose their flight muscles very quickly and won't fly/flush for the dog which is a very bad thing for a pup.  It's hard to find good flyers as it is.  If you are not buying from someone with large flight pens, they aren't worth using for a pup.  A few caught birds and you will create problems that will be very hard to reverse.

Just a holding pen, was looking for plans to make a recall pen though. After thinking bout it may only buy a half dozen or so to start so there flight condition doesnt deteriorate before the time they will be used. Thanx for more tips JSD.

The quail seem to be doing pretty good, let a few out and she found em w no problem. The only problem im having is shes getting fight on top of the bird before she locks up and focuses.

Pups will do that, they will look for the bird then sight point.  try hiding the bird alittle better if you can, Try and keep it out of her sight and she'll start to trust in her nose more. right now she's sight pointing.

I had to do that with my Viszla. he's gotten better at scent points but still want's to see the bird now and then, As long as she doesn't try to catch them she's doing well..
