NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / My Purpose Creek Outfitters experience - Brown County, Illinois

Last year was my first guided hunt (I have only been hunting for 2 years). A group of five of my buddies have been to the Golden Triangle in Illinois the past 3 years and none of them have scored a buck. This year, that changed. Although I did not see any shooters, my friend's father bagged this nice 140 class buck.

The area where we hunted was amazing. It just looked and felt like deer hunting should. However, the weather killed us. Hot has can be and although we hunted the pre-rut (Oct 29-Nov 2) all of the movement came after dark. One evening after not seeing any deer, I was waiting for my guide who was running late and I could see and hear bucks dogging does all over the field I hunted earlier. It was cool to hear them grunting and wheezing.

The camp at PCO was not very inviting. There was a horrible stench that seemed to get worse each day. It came from a trap door in the living room that was locked. We joked about there being bodies down there but I doubt we were far off. On top of that, the septic was full and there were more flies around than on an elephant with diarrhea.

The food, surprisingly, was quite good. Each night the owner's wife would show up with a hot cooked meal right about the time we were arriving from our evening hunts. There was always plenty to go around.

I guess if I had to say what they could do better it would be simple. Pay attention to your hunting land. Many of the stands we hunted have not been touched for years. This means that no one has been scouting for signs and moving stands. It almost seemed like the outfitter could care less if anyone bagged a buck. Now I know I said the weather was bad, but only one of us saw a shooter. Come on. That doesn't seem right when right around the corner, Hadley Creek guys were blasting monsters.

All in all, I can deal with the flies and smell but in return I expect better guides and a more attention. We paid a lot of money for this hunt and although no outfitter can guarantee success, they can at least put you on some deer so you have a chance.

Yeh,be careful with outfitters in illinois, Golden Triangle is one of the best,Pavlick doesn't let any of the guides hunt any of the properties, probobly the only outfitter in illinois doing that Beware of guides like Hadley Creek, been there, done that, the big bucks are mostly shot by guides and relatives. Stacy[owner]is a fat puke who will screw you real good, trust me

Does PCO stand for Piece of Crap outfitter??? God knows I've been to many...

I wouldn't go that far, bowhunter. They were cool people but I was skeptical when I realized they were letting the guides hunt the same land the paying customers were hunting.

I had the pleasure of hunting with skullcrusher in Ill.  I believe the weather hurt us alot however we should have seen more shooter bucks.  I was happy to see my father harvest such a great buck but would of enjoyed seeing bucks that were a bit bigger than Jersey deer.  This was my third hunt in Ill. and I would have to say Wells Creek Outfitters were the best.  You really have to do your homework because many of these places have the sell you a hunt routine down very well.

i would love to go again, but started a family, gona have to wait a few years.

very nice place. the two brothers do hunt the land. they each take a buck, after all client hunts are over. then take 20 or so does out, but this is on their 7,000ac leases.

I was out the same exact week as you and you're right, deer movement was minimal... I didn't have a good week at all. Only saw three bucks and all were scack rack year and a halfs... Only could have shot two deer... I was in Adams county the whole week tho.

i loved it out there. nice lodge, guides worked their asses off for us. me and keppy, he's on here, we went the last few days in oct into nov. third day there i saw 4 shooters, one pushing 160-170, at 30 yards no shot
i would go hunt with toby any time. he has choice farms. we hunted one farm with one other guy all week, 1300ac.
my last morning hunt i stuck a 140 class. shot low and back, jumped the deer while trailing, lost it.
toby called me in febuary, found one of his sheds. puss under the base, and stunk. afraid to ship it, couldn't even get close to it.
but i would love to get back there. can't get the money for a trip yet. you can email me if you need any quesstions answered, i would highly recomend eagle outfitters.

buckhunter,

It was different outfitters each year. This was the first year any of us went to Purpose Creek. The guys I hunt with ran into the owner Rob at a hunting convention in Pennsylvania and liked what he had to say. We all booked out trip immediately and didn't look back.

That being said, I am not sure I would go back to PCO unless it was to see Rob and eat his wife's delicious enchiladas again.
