I am considering getting the CZ 550 Varmint Laminated in .308 WIN.  Does anyone have one?  Heard good things about it?  It also comes in .22-250.  .308 seems to be more versatile for future hunts though, however,  .22-250 is supposedly an excellent varmint round.  Not sure what to do yet.  Thanks!

I would think that rifle would be to heavy to hike around for deer and the 308 not legal for NJ woodchucks ( Under .243 or 100 grain bullets. I think, but need to check). The cz 550 does get good reviews for the money. In 22-250 a good woodchuck gun.

I would also consider the Howa model 1700 Varmint Special. Comes with synthetic thumbhole stock and bull barrel. A real tack driver and great value.

the 308 is a little extream for varmits dont ys think. being it is a top notch sniper rifle in the army for head shots.  for varmits cant you just use a 22cal

The .308 is a great cartridge, accurate and versatile. But, do you need it?

.22-250 is great for varmints. Not that the .308 is punishing, but the .22-250 has little recoil/report and you can have fun shooting it all day --- at critters or paper (thats how you get really good ... lots of practice). Ammo is relatively cheap, and the .22-250 is easy to hand load.

You can use the .22-250 for whitetails in the Pennsylvania woods (I think PGC requires an .270 for elk).

So, unless you might be using the gun for larger animals at distance ... maybe consider the 22?

Good luck ... I have the itch for a new rifle, too.

Basically I already have a varmint rifle, so the next gun I get is a "just because" rifle.  So it doesn't have to be specifically for varmint.  I was thinking a heavy barreled .308 for potential target shooting as well.  Tom do you know what country the Howa's originate from?

Howa is manufactured in Japan and imported into the US by Legacy Arms of Virginia.

CZ Makes an EXCELLENT Varmint Hunter Rifle in 22-250.  1898 Mauser Action, 25.6" Bull Barrel, Heavy Laminate Monte Carlo Stock.  On top of Mine rides a 4-16x 56MM Mil Dot 30mm Tube Tactical Scope.  She shoots 1/2" groups @ 100yds -Easily!  http://www.skyclubcondos.com/john/CZ_22-250_1000px.jpg

the cz 527 is an awesome line. but why the 308 cal? a 7mm is ballistically superior to the 308. Anyway the 22-250 is a hard hitting round, that, in can be used for deer , and is in my opinion the 2nd best varmint round. speed and basllistic coef says the 204 rates #1. get the cz

I don't know about the rifle, but I have a CZ Redhead O/U and I am very happy with it.
