I currently hold a NY pistol license and maintain a residence there. Because of work, I recently moved to NJ and have a residence here as well.
Since I already own my pistols legally in NY, can I keep and shoot them in NJ without an FID? Will I have any problems if I show up to a range with my NY license? Now I realize it might just be worth it for me to get an FID and save myself legal confusion later. If I do this does it mean I need to forfeit my NY license? |

I don't have a answer for you but you need to pick a state to claim residence first. Were do you pay primary income tax? __________________ Pro-baiter

When I moved to NJ I didnt have my FID yet, local PD officer told me I can keep my long arms and pistols without a FID. He also told me I could register them all if I wanted but told me he wouldn't.
If you live within NYC limits (5 boroughs) I would consider keeping the gun in NJ and save the $270 permit fee every 3 years. (if that's the amount it still is?) |

Thanks GWHunter. I think that answers my question. I actually live in Suffolk Co out on LI so I don't need to worry about the fee.
And no matter what I have to leave the AKs out there since NJ won't allow them at all. |

I know that you are concerned about legally possessing them here in NJ, but about the shooting range .... did you inquire? My present gun club/range does not require a NJFID (they strongly desire your membership in the NRA, though).
I used to belong to Central Jersey Rifle & Pistol in Jackson. They did require a NJFID, but not for out of state residents. Good luck. __________________ We, The People, are all first responders.

A NJ FPID is for purchasing only. It is NOT required for gun ownership. There is no mandatory gun registration in NJ. __________________ "To be unarmed and therefore helpless in the face of evil is irresponsible and in fact complicit to said evil. | I haven't inquired yet at the police station or a range yet. I have been wanting to go trap shooting lately so I think I'm going to start with a place in Northern Jersey and see what they say. | ||

No trap/skeet/clays range is going to ask you for a NJFID. Only some private clubs with membership. __________________ We, The People, are all first responders.

I believe it is illegal to transport handguns across state lines without a special permit, so if I'm correct and I'm pretty sure I am you can not take your handguns into NJ if your primary residence is NY.
Longguns are ok as long as you legally own them. |
