My grandpa says that this used to be a very popular tactic years ago.  Has anyone ever killed a deer by hunting from down in a hole?  I always thought about it.  Its gotta look alot more natural that a blind to the deer.  Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I get a kick out of hunting from the ground sometimes.

I think I want to try it this year just for fun. Dig out a hole and brush it in a little bit with just enough room for shooting lanes to shoot through.

For bow hunting Im not sure how well it would work, but for gun hunting it might be very helpful.

Bri, its a great idea. You can do that on YOUR properties and I'll film ya.

I've dug more than a few fox hole in my day, then filled them in, then dug them again, then filled them in and then dug them again..

Ahhhh. Infantry training...What a fond experience !!

For some because it was legal to bait that way.

Chris has it down if you dig a good hole and brush it in it is a far less noticeable ground blind than if the whole thing were above ground.
Many pronghorn hunters make these out west a large diamiter hole that you brush in and sit on the edge of with you feet and bowlimb down in.
This makes you less than half your regular hight and well hidden near a water hole or fence crossing.
All of this before pop up blinds and portable treestands.

Pit blinds work great for duck hunting I never realy thought  about hunting deer out of one, I dont see why it wont work, plus its warmer in a hole then it is in a tree stand

My salem lease had a goose pit in the middle of about 50 ac of open field. Once the deer got wise they would run to the center befoer they would feed. That pit helped me put down more than a few deer.

or just find a big deadfall that the roots tore a nice hole open...sit right in there plus you have a great backdrop!  ive put myself on lots of deer doing that.

Huh...with all this info coming from everyone I guess hunting from a manmade hole is legal, but I had always thought it was illegal.

i would think digging a pit on state lands or wildlife management areas may constitute damage of some sort. also another thing to think about is someone falling into it. eveyone is lawyer happy these days.my neighbors kid dug a pit years ago and the father fell in it and broke his leg. digging deer pit blinds is a south jersey thing. they use to dig a pit and throw an old truck cap over the top with some brush to camo it up.i would look for a big fallen tree and sit in the root ball.

Many state lands have "holes" all you have to do is look for them. Don't know if there sink holes, old wells or fallen trees which have long since rotted and disappeared, but they leave nice crators. As deadbolt stated a tree uprooted makes a nice hole and seems to attract deer.

I used to hunt a farm as a kid that is now Turkey Brook park in Mt Olive. On the High side of the field was a drainage ditch that ran accross the entire width of the field, bordered by a dirt road. The ditch was about 4 ft deep for the most part. We used to us it for goose blind and deer blind. Bow was just fine, you could crawl the entire length of it if the wind was right and get closer if deer were not moving. Take a knee, draw bow, pop up and let er rip... Very fun... Very productive..

during 6day we always run into old timers who are in a hole.  We actually line up our drives so they can considered one of our standers.  I dont remember if anybody every killed a deer out of a hole but they always see deer.

Hunted out of holes in MT and it was an awsome tactic

See no reason why it wouldn't work.

You can call it the "Man Hole"

can't see much from a hole unless your in big open hardwoods or a field. Deer will be on you before you know it. With a gun it works great in open corfields

I actually just saw a show where they were antelope hunting and did just that, dug a hole, brushed around it and bow hunted out of it.  Seemed to work really well for them.

Thanks for all the great feedback. I'm going to try it this year.  Only on private land though.  I don't want to get in trouble.

Took a nice doe this way last year at 25 yards. I also missed a nice wide 6 by shooting over his back. It is hard to judge distance down in the hole shooting into an opening. If pressured deer start to look up why not move down, especially when the leaves fall off the trees. Pick a spot with evergreen foliage as a backdrop.

ive done it out of a natural drainage ditch... if that counts.. i do 50% of my hunting sitting on the ground in a bush, and i must say it works tremendously. thats why i dont believe in scentlok, if i can sit on the ground with 2 people (i sit there with my girlfriend) and have deer walk right past us with no scentlok at all.. it must not be needed..
good luck

Up here in Passic and Morris you still have alot of  big old blow down holes that I'm guessing were from old American Chestnut tress based on the size. I've sat in them a couple of times. If you think about it, depending on the slope of the land and depth of the hole, the only thing exposed is your head.

I use to hunt a piece in Hunterdon that when I sat on my stool at the top of a slope I counldn't see the  groud on the side of the hill but I could see the deer. They would walk right past me, it was the same idea.
