My little Maltese gets nuts when he hears Thunder or Fireworks. Panting and shaking and fidgety.
Is there anything I can do to settle him down?

Jr try to distract them.  I dog gets that way to.  I got a bark collar, but she seems to shake more in fear of getting shaked.  I try to distract her.  I do it when hunting too.  If she is on the bird she is fine.  If not she startles.

JR. My dogs do the same thing when we get cracking thunder and fireworks.

The people that live behind on me, they set fireworks off all of the time. My dogs and chickens dont like it.

Next time they do it...I might have to go talk to them. They fire off some serious sh*t too !!

Those things go like 200' in the air..No BS

My Abby is steady as a rock and just looks around as to like where the sound is like from a gun.

every living thing can be conditioned to love anything

just feed your dog tasty treats and shoot off your gun at the same time

When I was growing up, our family Lab shaked like crazy during t-storms and 100 times as bad during fireworks.  What worked well for us was to bring her down into the basement right before dark, turn on some loud music like you were having a party, work on a few chores down there, etc.  Most often, she thought this was normal business and didn't realize there were fireworks blasting off 1/2 mile away.

My 14yr old St Bernard/Collie mix still freaks during storms and firworks. He is an outside dog who usally has the run of the yard. During storms or fireworks I lock him in his pen so he can feel secure in his dog house. Then I go in the house and let him deal with it..
If I dont lock him up he runs all over trying to break in the house and under the porch. So my advice is to put the dog in it crate or a place that they feel secure and let them sort it out.

Trigger is not gun shy.  But fireworks and storms he is a mess unless he is in the house playing.  But if he is in his kennel he panics.

He most likely feels helpless then! He cant contol the situation .

I have one that wants outside bad to go find the bird she thinks must be out there somewhere--never mind if it's pitch black out--and another that likes to bark at them and I have two well seasoned gun dogs that freak out, shake, drool, hide.  Go figure.  Don't comfort nervous behavior of any type, it only reinforces the behavior.  Give them a quiet place like a crate and ignore.
The biggest cause of gun shy dogs are fireworks and trap ranges.

My dog has the same problems, a couple of years ago someone told us about pet relaxant its all natural and it works great. It take about 30 minutes to work, it will mellow her out and takes that edge off, sometimes if its bad we will give her two. To order it  go to oxyfresh.com and look for pet relaxant. Even the vet has started to recommend this to others.

i would be very careful of using drug type doggie downers. those type medications even prescribed from a vet can have reactions that vary widely from dog to dog. my dog layed on the floor for quite a while with extremely shallow breathing.my buddy at work had similar problems with his huge pit bull. with pet medications there are sometimes problems and risks even with small doses. my dog comes to the range with me once in a while with no problems but when it comes to fireworks and lightning and thunder she is a mess.i also tried the nature audio cd-s with the thunder and rain saounds. it didnt condition anything but i guess it may work for some dogs. the only thing that works is turning up the tv and lots of treats.

New pup wasn't bothered by the fireworks one bit tonight.  Laid on the floor chewing on his toy.

Haven't had any thunder yet.

I don't know why but none of my dogs have really cared about the fireworks. Thier ears perk up and they are on alert but they don't seem to care much.

Big thunderstorms make them a little uneasy though. No freaking out or anything. The dog is glued to my side like he is protecting me (or am I protecting him). I can't call it.

I start them from day one with conditioning to loud noises. Maybe that helped them. I'm not sure how I would deal with a adult dog with those issues.
