| My son just passed his bow test and can't wait to hit the woods. I usually do not hunt early season because I am not familiar with the icing down the deer and ruling our spoiled deer meat thing. We usually butcher our own meat.. Anyone in gloucester county area have a walk in box that they rent space in for early season??? Thought about making a walk in out of a shed and air conditioner anyone try this?? | ||

Thought about making a walk in out of a shed and air conditioner anyone try this?? I've heard it works quite well. My garage is attatched to the house and the walls are not insulated that well, so with my AC on, my deer will last overnight hanging with ice in its gut. But all that is needed is to skin, quarter and put it in the fridge or cooler. Just don't let the meat sit in the blood water.I do however rise the cavity before butchering with cold water. I bring qallon milk jugs frozen and place in the chest cavity as soon as I get to my van. __________________ The 4 seasons - Almost Summer, Summer, Still Summer and Hunting Season

They have something at Harry's army and navy that you can buy to keep your meat from spoiling. I gut my deer out right away and immediately throw bags of ice in the body cavity. It works well. __________________ EAT SLEEP HUNT Make your dreams a reality. Take a kid hunting. Film your next hunt. www.nloutdoors.com

| a walk in refridge is kept at 37 degrees an airconditioner only goes to the low 60's please dont count on the shed .... a giant fish igloo with a ton of ice is a much safer idea. | ||

| I have a neoghbor who processes his own deer too I asked him about the whole plywood shed or small room within a larger garage he said something about the ac drying out the meat too much and that he uses some sort of cooling coils in his shed I will ask him to provide me some more info on why air conditioners are good but not great congrats to you son on his bow test and best of luck this season | ||

Chefm70 stated what I am about to say. An AC isn't cold enough. You really need to rip the hide off and get the meat down to 42-44 degrees and an AC won't quite do the job. If you let the meat get above 45 degrees or higher, you are asking for bacteria.
I've found that if you bag a deer when it's warm, dress it quickly (but safely), get ice inside the cavity and on the hindquarters, checked-in and then home, you have a good chance to quartering it and getting it into the frig to cool...then make the choice cuts the next morning. I try to not bow hunt if it will be above 75 degrees. If I do go, it's more of a scouting trip with a bow in my hand... |

| I quarter the deer and hang the quarters in an old refrigerator that I installed a closet pole a crossed it works well. Just trash pick an refrigerator remove all the shelves and install a closet pole or a piece of conduit in the frig and hang your quarters off it. | ||

i live in gloucester county. i used to keep deer in a flower farmers cooler. now when i shoot one i just bone out and put in the fridge to age. it only takes a hour or so to skin and bone out.
the orchard guys may not let you since the contents of the cooler is for food. but i know for a fact they hang their deer in there. just be quick with the knife. __________________ united bowhunters of NJ
