NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 12 / More land open to the public

Hillsboro has decided to add more property and hunters to it's existing deer management program. After a very successful start to their program,more permits will be issued in a public lottery at the hillsboro municipal building. Hillsboro,one of the few townships allowing hunting oppritunities to the public has stated they have had no problems with hunter involvment and safety. The decision to use the public instead of gun clubs has proved that the public is a viable option for deer management. Initially the residents were concerned but now are standing behind hunters involved,collisions with deer by motorists are down and the professionalism displayed by those involved has put the residents at ease. This is good news for somerset county hunters,the trend has changed from extermination by individuals like great white to gun clubs only and now is starting to take hold that the public, especially local residents are a safe and very viable option. Every positive responce is being sent to the freeholders for their review. Now everyone that applies can't expect to be accepted for there are limited openings however everyone has a "chance" now. With the hunters in NJ losing property faster than they can find more, opening property by counties and municipalities can give evryone some more options. Many of our freeholders live in hillsboro and see how successful this program is. In time,more properties and municipalities will follow. I'd like to thank every person involved in the hillsboro hunts for their professionalism and effort to show all properties should be open to the public and not just the select few or gunclubs. Kudos to you township hunters,have another safe and successful season.

Hunterdon county has been doing this since the 70's.
I have often thought that it was the hight of stupidity on the part of other towns and counties to NOT do what Hunterdon county and Hillsboro twp. are doing and with such good results both deer wise and dollar wise.

Agreed, yet we still have townships located right smack in the middle of these succesful programs that continue to shun the public and lease their lands exclusively to clubs. I think they see it as a money making opportunity and frankly thats BS since public tax dollars paid for that land, at the very least they should let township residents hunt it!

good deal

Hunting is a legal activity and we should be able to use all public lands that we want to hunt .The lands should not be limited to joggers or hikers !!

Did I say it did a-hole.  Why the nasty reply.  Ever think there is a Hillsboro and a Hillsborough.  I was looking to clarify the exact town for people that may be interested.  What a jerk!

Whoa there Mikey no need to fly off the handle and spew personal attacks over something like this!

Perhaps the names you call out all live in your mirror.

Maybe you need to find some character because yes it did bother me, there was no call for it at all, especially since the question was clearly directed at the person who originally posted.  I asked a simple question to try and clarify the town for people that maybe interested, no more no less.

Sorry fellows I didn't see Jakes comment that harsh really?

A harsh word stirs dissension but a gentil word turns away wrath.

I would have spelled boro also that way. Isn't that a spelling also to be considered?

Hillsborough Renews Safe And Successful Deer Hunt With Permits For Fifth Year
Release Date: June 13, 2008

Recognizing four consecutive years of 100% safety in the Township’s Wildlife Management program, the Hillsborough Township Committee, Tuesday night, approved the recommendation of the Wildlife Management Commission to add one public property and two additional deer hunting permits for the 2008-2009 season, the fifth year of the program.

Limited, permit only deer hunting by 52 licensed and insured hunters will now be permitted at 17 public properties, totaling over 720 acres, in the hunting season which runs from September, 2008 to February, 2009.

Dr. Bob Matros, Chairman of the Hillsborough Wildlife Management Commission, and Hillsborough Police Lt. Victor Kubisch, reported to the Committee that the Hillsborough wildlife management and deer hunting program for 2007-2008 was 100% safe and very successful.

Mayor Anthony Ferrera stated, "Maintaining a safe program through four consecutive years is an outstanding achievement by the permitted hunters, our Police Department, the Wildlife Management Commission and the state's Fish and Game Division.

"I know that all those involved always put safety first with this program and that starts with the mandatory training for participating hunters," the Mayor added.

Committeeman Bob Wagner, liaison to the Wildlife Management Commission, noted, "Another successful part of the program has been the Hunters Helping the Hungry venison food bank program.  According to reports we have received, 600 pounds of venison was donated by hunters during the last season."

Hillsborough Township authorizes a limited number of hunting permits for specific public properties in the Township, during the deer hunting season which runs from September to February.

50 permits were issued for 2007-2008 and 52 permits will be issued for 2008-2009.

A new 13 acre area on South Branch Road will be added to the list of available sites with two bow hunting permits issued for the area for 2008-2009.

A 28 acre area on Montgomery Road that was previously available will be expanded by 26 acres with one additional permit added to the two that already are in place.

A 25 acre area off of Scott Drive will have the number of permits reduced from 2 to 3, with a change that will allow both hunters to hunt the property at the same time.

Interested licensed hunters participate in a lottery to be awarded areas to hunt.  A very limited number of hunters are allowed on each site and hunters may only hunt the site they are awarded.

Hunters must already be licensed by the State of New Jersey, pay a fee of $75 for the Township permit, must have $1 million in liability insurance, and must participate in a mandatory training class.

Hunting is mostly conducted with bow and arrow shooting down from a deer stand in a tree.  Under a regulation approved last year, hunters are required to wear a safety harness while in the deer stand.

New Jersey law permits the regulated use of licensed firearms for specific limited periods during the hunting season.  The extension of state regulared firearm hunting is limited to Areas 1, 2, 3, 6. 7, 8 (buckshot only), and 16.

Hunters must be at a minimum 450 feet from a dwelling by state law.  In almost all cases the hunting areas are further than 450 feet from dwellings.

Permit applications will be available in the Hillsborough Township Clerk’s Office beginning on July 1, 2008.  The application deadline is 4 pm, Friday, July 18, 2008.  The permit fee does not have to be paid until after the awarding of a hunting area.  Proof of insurance must be submitted with the application.

The Lottery for assignment of permitted hunting areas will be held in the Municipal Courtroom on Wednesday, August 6, 2008, at 10 am.  Hunters do not need to be present to be awarded an area assignment.

The Wildlife Commission also recommended non lethal methods to control deer damage including:

1) Continue to plot all road killed deer from motor vehicle accidents on a map of the Township to locate where additional signage may be needed.

2) Continue the replacement of worn deer crossing road signs and/or an increase of signs at key points around the Township;

3) Continue the trimming of brush on public properties further back from the road to allow motorists improved vision of deer at the roadside;

4) Provide “Wildlife Tips” throughout year on the Township’s website on such topics relating to deer such as deer resistant plants, leaving wildlife alone in the wild, driving tips during peak times when deer are most active and the negative issues of feeding deer and other wildlife issues;

5) Make available a detailed list that can be obtained at the Townships Clerk’s office on landscape plants rated by deer resistance.

My family has been in Hillsborough for 30+ years now.  My father fought for NUMEROUS years against the Rose Reina-Rosenbaums(sp) etc...and urged the township to open up the public lands to hunting.  And the thing is, he has never hunted these public lands.  He did this all for his fellow hunters.  Thankfully i already have access to some private land in town and wont hoard more land by taking a permit.  I'll follow in his footsteps and do this for my fellow hunters as well.  It's nice to see that after 5 years, things are still going strong and progressing.  Thanks Dad.

In Hillsborough, the hunter, once selected will be eligible for 3 years for the same parcel, provided they follow the rules, return the survey and       re-apply.
