NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 6 / Trail Cams going out this Saturday
Posted:  12 Jun 2008 7:41 AM
Well it's that time again. I've completed my off season scouting of several new properties that I lucked into, and found the major travel routes, and plenty of sign indicating that the bucks were there last year. I spotted a few while scouting with decent antler growth already. So now is the time to hoist those trail cameras into place, and find the bigger boys so I can get the tree stands set by the 1st week of August.

MTH what kind of camera's do you use?  I find the Moultrie's take the best pics and have the longest battery life.  I'm going to pic up a few more of those this year.

JrHunt we set up a Moultrie I40 last summer before the season and up until last month it was still on the original batteries.  That camera is super efficient.  Snaps like 4-600 pics per week and great picture quality.

I have 2 moultrie I-40's. battery life is great! trigger speed is good, and the SD Memory cards snap right into my Nikon digital camera for quick viewing/printing of pictures.

I also have the steel security boxes for the cameras--only $30.00 each, so no theft/bear damage. Only problem with the security box, is that it actually bolts to the tree with 2 6" lag bolts from inside the box-so it takes a while to set up a camera, and the locations are limited to larger trees-unless you are willing to risk theft.

i know the cam doesn't lie... but if u have that feeling of the big one being there he is.... u just have to be at the right place at the right time.... if you have does... when bow starts and the rut starts moving, the phases of the moon start working, mr biggy will be chasin all those does....

i have had to many times where i saw nothing but does and scrubby bucks but just had this gut feeling he will be there and never gave up.. and i would see him.... i would just maybe adjust the came like 50yds to the left or right and see whats workign that way.... he may just be camera shy!!!

Don't give up on that spot so quick. I pulled the card on one of my honey hole cams and had 40 pix of the same doe walking by everyday for 10 days.I know there are huge bucks at this spot.

It's been 6 weeks of pics from 4 different locations--all without bait and transition trails. Plenty of action with does and scrubby bucks.

Also I found a new problem with the Moultrie security box. Apparently at my last stand location, I had a bat trying to use the box as a nest. So I had lots of pics of bat wings as the bat crawled over the camera into the box.

Next saturday I'll post the camera over bait for the first time and see what's snacking. I have one location that is an old apple orchard. The trees do produce small apples, but I'll start to supplement those with fresh deer apples under the trees as if the fruit is beginning to fall. Hopefully that will get me more pics of what's in the area. I know the deer are hitting that spot now checking for falling fruit.
