NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 9 / Rifle/Muzzy Test
Posted:  11 Jun 2008 10:30 AM
I am going for my Muzzy/Rifle certification this July in NJ.  I still need to pick up the training materials and read, but after some 10 years of putting this off, I finally decided to go for it!

I've been bow and shotgun hunting for 20 years now and want to try something a little different and to be able to shoot a bit further.  I don't have a muzzleloader yet and will probably wait until after my test to go out and purchase one (I'll use the state supplied muzzy).

Any info on shooting a muzzy prior to my test would be appreciated and also what make/models would you suggest when I go out and buy one on my own?  Thanks everyone.  I expect to be stuck at the range for my written test and shooting exam for 3 hours.  Has anyone done this recently who can give me further details?  Much appreciated.

The muzzy test is not hard. If you already have your NJ hunting license, you can bypass the full test, and just take the muzzy portion. The shooting portion is actually pretty interesting. I came prepared with my in-line muzzy, but the guy offerred the state rifle. He demonstrated loading procedures/charging, and firing first. Then I repeated the process. The state rifle was a .38 cal rifle which was loaded with patch and ball-substantially different from my in-line, and a pretty neet experience.

You will do fine on your testing.

As for weapons choices, the KIS method still applies, Keep it simple. Get something with an easy access breach plug to make cleaning easy. The CVA models that open like a single shot shotgun fit in this category, and are cheap at under $200.00. They also have the benefit of an internal 209 primer-to avoid moisture issues.

Thanks MTH!  I have never handled nor shot one before so I would be thankful if the instructor did run thru the process and then I simply repeat, etc.  That would make sense.  I'll just read and do my workbook and see what happens the night I show up for the exam.  Many thanks.

I'm also considering going for a muzzy license this summer.  Thanks for that information MTH.

Northern Hunter, in response to your pm, if you already have your NJ firearms hunter education card from taking the shot gun test on a prior occassion, you can present that card at the muzzy test. That will exempt you from taking the general knowledge portion of the written test and limit the written test to just the muzzy specific questions.

Make sure you future muzzy hunters check out Ant's thread on the new bill before the judicial committee tomorrow that seeks to ban all .50 cal firearms in the state-including muzzy's -Make your voice's heard, and write to each member on the committee!

When I took it we fired the state rifle, a 50 caliber T/C percussion model with a round ball and a 50 grain powder charge then shot 5 rounds of 22 lr from another state rifle. Some day they should just combine the class to make a firearm license a firearm license... If you know what I mean.. Having to buy an extra rifle permit on top of  a muzzleloader permit is stupid..

I'm not sure about that-you could try. The worst that they can do is say no-then you just take the full test.

I couldn't agree more-but it will never happen-$$$ talks, and having seperate permits means more money.

What they should do away with is that stupid "rifle permit" why should I buy a rifle permit just so I can buy a muzzy permit-can;'t they just role the cost of that rifle permit into the muzzy permit and save me the step of getting and carrying 2 documents instead of just 1?

It is also a requirement for rifle hunting groundhogs and carrying a 22 for trapping.. I think these reasons should be covered with regular "firearms" license. The last time I checked a muzzleloader and a centerfire rifle were both "firearms" This is just another thing you have to buy and another thing you have to make sure you keep up to date and carry with you so you don't get in trouble... remember this...all of the fish and game tests are geared towards younger kids...if they make them to hard the kids wont pass and their goes our the future of our sport...if they make them for 5 years olds then the kids wont learn anything...this test is aimed towards 10 year olds...you shouldnt have a problem...good luck i took mine when i was 15 and passed with flying colors...

Actually, the younger kids usually do much better than the adults on the tests.  It's not because the questions are easy or targeted for kids, it's because the kids don't think they know it all and actually listen to the instructors.

You can not bypass the genral part of the test EVERY TIME YOU COME THROUGHT THE DOOR YOU MUST TAKE THE FIRST 40 QUESTIONS PLUS WHAT EVER COURSE YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE THE  ONLY THING YOU CAN PASS ON IS THE FIELD WALK IF YOU TOOK THE TEST IN THE PAST YEAR and if you have any questions I am the one who gives the test

Thanks Woodruff_Len.  Only part I am worried about is the practical because I've never handled a muzzy before and don't know the first thing about them.  I'm all for learning because I want to start hunting with a muzzy and I'll be all ears for learning whatever it is they have to teach me.
