NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Turkey Action / My 2008 Turkey Season Reflections . . .
Posted:  23 May 2008 3:21 PM
My 2008 turkey season has been interesting to say the least.  I originally though that if I put in the time, and really paid attention to what I was doing, I would be rewarded well for my efforts.

In 2007, I hunted weeks B-D, and G.  I hunted 2 days a week and had someone else do my calling for me.  I ended up with 2 birds.

In 2008, I hunted weeks A-E, and G.  I have hunted pretty much 5 days a week and have done all of my owen calling.  Again, I ended up with 2 birds.

So, where are my rewards ? ? ?

My rewards I have learned are more than just something I can physically touch.  My rewards are the experiences I have had, the knowledge I have obtained, and the confidence I have gained, not only in my skills as a hunter, but in myself as well and also in finding a comfortabless in my own skin and with who I am.  My reward is having seen a beautful sunrise with the dew glistening upon the fields.  My reward is hearing countless gobbles on numerous mornings and seeing many birds, even though I missed a few.  My reward is being able to identify a hen calling in the distance.  My reward is knowing that I can sneak up on a bird, not that any of mine were taken that way, but I do know now that I can do it.  My reward is having been able to walk up on many deer in several fields and I have been snorted from only yards away in the darkness.  My reward is knowing now that male turkey poop looks like Mr Twirley Ice Cream.  My reward is being able to call in a hen.  My reward is being able to spot turkeys in a field at farther and farther distances.  My reward is having had a squirrel cling to a tree several feet away from me and tilt his head, as I am sitting there in full camo, trying to figure out exectly what I am.  My reward is having called in a Peacock.  My reward is having seen a fawn only several hours old.  My reward is having learned from the mistakes I have made.  My reward is having made new friends in the process this season.  My reward is having had a hen stand 3 yards in front of me and a tom roost directly above my head.  My reward is knowing I have the courage and strength to do the right thing when faced with a difficult situation. My reward is having learned just how much determination I really do have. So, you see, the same number of birds, but countless rewards and many amazing memories.

I may even go out next week and try to shoot a bird . . . with my camera.

I really had a fantastic turkey season.  Thank you all for sharing it with me.

Oh My Goodness, where can I get a permit? Where are the state lands in New York?  Who wants to go with me?  How long will it take me to get to work from New York?

Just joking . . .

It sounds like you live in a great turkey area and got so much out of it.

There is nothing like being out to feel and see darkness turn to morning.  Nothing.

The ironic thing is that I have NEVER been a morning person.  It usually takes me walking around stupid for an hour to be fully awake and I've always joked that I would trade my soul to the devil for just 10 more minutes of sleep in the morning.  I am late for work every day regardless, but yet for the important things, like hunting and fishing, I am up and ready and excited to go each and every time
