NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Turkey Action / 05/23/08 My WORST Turkey Hunting Day EVER ! ! !

Get in and set up by 4:45am.  Started out on the private property where the birds have been roosting, but in the hedge row along a corn field where I shot my last bird.  The girls started their chattering earling and eventually the two boys chimed in with their gobbling.  BUT, nobody left the roost until 6:50 am.  When they did leave, the girls continued their conversation on the ground, but the boys got real quiet.  I waited silently until 7:30 hoping that they would make their way to the field, but they didn't.  I used my gobbler call followed by a few soft clucks on the double talker hoping that the hens would come in and bring the toms with them, but I called in another hunter instead.  So much for that spot

I then drove around a little and my regular jakes were not there, so I headed to the swamp.  On my way back there, I heard a gobble and it was very close, so, I jumped into the woods, set up and called once on the box call.  I got a gobbler yelp in response and he was only about 60 yards away, ok maybe 80.  Then no response.  I waited.  I waited.  I waited some more.  I then tried some soft clucks on the double talker and again waited.  NOTHING, no response.  So, I worked my way toward where I initially heard him, and who do you think I run into . . . Yep, the same damn hunter from my first spot, claiming that he lost sight of the posted signs and was looking to get back to where he should have been hunting . . . BULL SH@T ! ! ! (He was a mile off course) On my way out, my foot tangled in some brush on the swamp ground and I fell.  Managed to keep the gun from hitting the ground, but I landed with my shin on a stump knot and I came out of there limping on my left leg. So much for that spot and that bird

Well, I figure that now I'll hit the state land, except that when I get there, there's a red truck parked right where I usually park, so I know that somebody is sitting right where I usually sit.  So much for that spot.

OK, I head over to the cemetary, nothing to be heard.  Move to Buttermilk and I can't do the walk.  Every step I take really really hurts and it's like 11:30 at this point.

Well, I realize that I dropped one of my calls at the first place I was at this morning, so I headed back there to get it.  Arrive at 11:58 am.  Two red heads in front of my set up spot

I should have just stayed put in my first spot and taken a nap until the boys showed up cause eventually they did and I was not there

That's why it's called hunting. You know that if you had stayed there all day they would not have showed up.
Hope the leg gets better.

I know Bob, but after that other hunter walked in to my gobbler call, I thought for sure that between us, we messed up the spot for the morning.

By the way, you didn't take a shot at the jake?

Today, you got a real life reminder how important it is to keep the safety on SAFE, and finger away from the trigger, until you are ready to shoot. Falling, tripping, stumbling with a loaded gun in your hands.

You really are quite the outdoorsperson.

Yes, I am ALWAYS extra careful with the gun.  I was carrying it sideways in front of me with both hands, but safety was on SAFE, and one hand was on the stock and the other was on the barrel.

I'm Ms Grit, one tough cookie, it'll be fine, although, I am sure the pretty colors will match those on my right arm

Crappy day in the woods beats a great day in the office!

Good try.At least the other guy was aiming at you. Its discouraging when an area is disturbed I would have moved on too.. Nice season you had regardless.

I hope you mean wasn't
He came in to me answering like a hen and when I realized he was a person and not a bird, I verbally  identified myself as a hunter

No harm meant Robin. Phone, ring, click, whoops
I have to give you credit for all those early morning. You squeezed in 5 years of what the average Joe would learn turkey hunting into one season. Sadly you are really hooked but those gobbles never grow old. Name me another animal/bird that comes looking for you LoL. Congrats again on a fine season.
I usually holler Don't Shoot when turkey Joe comes wandering thru

I hope your leg feels better.

Nothing will ruin a hunt faster than seeing/hearing another hunter !

That is why big country or a lot of exclusive permission on smaller pieces is a must.
