Yesterday I started to tree yelp about 5:30, and I thought that I heard a gobble in front of me on the other side of a ridge. I started off in that direction and thought that I heard another gobble across the road. I climbed to a shelf and went in the direction of the bird. I came to a trail, and ascended the mountain. I went to the top and I couldn't find the bird. He suddenly developed lock-jaw. As I was descending at 6:47 I heard a shot from across the road in the direction of the other bird I had heard. I went to another spot, it was about 7:55.I was runnin n’ gunnin’ and all of a sudden I thought I heard a turkey yelping to the east of me. I took off towards the sound and heard a bunch of crows. Each time the crows cawed a tom gobbled. I closed until I was above him on the ridge about 125yds away. I began to descend the hill towards him. He was gobbling about every minute. When I was about 100yds away from him, I looked through the woods and saw a house. I quick went back up the hill a little and renewed calling. I now had to get aggressive in order to pull him away from the house.
While he was gobbling I heard what every turkey hunter fears, all of a sudden I heard a hen yelping. I couldn’t go any closer, so my only hope was to call him into me. Every time I cutt- he boomed back. Then the sound of his gobbles got further away. I got aggressive by cuttin and cackling and they came back, just not back up the hill. Then the hens pulled him away, and after awhile I didn’t hear him anymore. Today I dropped my daughter off at the bus stop and got to my hunting area at 9:00. I cutt and cackled on the way to the spot to no avail. When I got there, I cutt and he boomed back. He was already in the yard. I cutt and cackled and he answered. I cutt and cackled at about 9:45 and he gobbled back. I waited a few minutes and clucked and purred and he answered from right below me about 125yds away. Every time I called he roared back. He gobbled from below the shelf about 80yds. About 10:15 he suddenly he stopped calling. I figured he was with a hen and breeding her. Suddenly from my right I catch movement coming up the hill towards my decoys, a coyote tackled my jake decoy. After knocking it over he bit it’s neck, then realizing it was fake took off. That’s why the bird got quiet. At 10:30 I resumed calling and he answered. I kept calling and he got closer booming back each time. At 10:45 I heard a lawn mower and back-pack blower. The landscapers had arrived . They finished up at 11:30. I now had a half-hour. At 11:40 I started calling and he answered. I kept calling and he came closer. When I figured him to be about 60yds away I heard a hen yelping. I continued calling but they just wouldn’t climb the hill. I stopped calling at 11:45. I'm going out at daybreak so the saga continues.......__________________ When Guns Are Outlawed- Only Outlaws Will Have Guns

I'm off now to thwe turkey woods. I hope that I can cut him off before he gets to the private property. If not I have to either get them hens gone, or call them in. __________________ When Guns Are Outlawed- Only Outlaws Will Have Guns

I got to the parking lot at 5:00. I walked into my spot without calling. I got there at about 5:25. I owl hooted without a response. I then set up my dekes in the birds probable travel corridor. At 5:30 I did a tree yelp- no response. Then I tree yelped on both a slate and a diaphragm and a bird started to cluck from behind me. I turned around to the right and saw a bird in a tree 25yds away. It was clucking and birds started yelping, & clucking all around me. I thought crap, they’re behind me. The bird to my right flew down cackling, and started clucking on the ground. When she flew down a gobble boomed from in front of me up the mountain. I yelped and he answered again. Now more birds were flying down and clucking and yelping. I stopped calling. The gobbles were drawing nearer. Suddenly I saw a dark object about 60yds out, then another and another. I immediately recognized three red and white heads. A hen yelped and one gobbler gobbled then strutted. Another bird went into a half strut, and the strutter broke strut and pecked him. Each time one of the other birds tried to strut he pecked them. I now knew which bird I wanted. I picked up the gun when they were 40yds out, but decided to wait since they were going right towards my decoys.
When they were 30yds away they went to my left towards the decoys and I suddenly lost sight of them. There was a boulder between me and them. I had set up on the downhill side of a small knoll for cover and now I couldn’t see them. I didn’t panic, then out popped one head, then another. That’s all I could see was their heads. One of them pulled his head back in and I saw a fan. I put the sights on him and the Mossberg barked and he started flopping. I'll post pic's later. ![]() __________________ When Guns Are Outlawed- Only Outlaws Will Have Guns

Cool, nice job But you got lucky getting in the woods so late without those birds spooking on you. You must've been like a ghost to them for them to not see you set up 25 yds from their tree at 5:25am!__________________ Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today.

| Mike , nice bird! Bring it to Jimmy's and throw it into the smokehouse! Did you make his 50th birthday party? I knocked down a big gobbler back in April during the first week. Once again congratulations! Paul | ||
