NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Turkey Action / Gobble, Gobble, Gobble, Right ABOVE MY HEAD . . .

Where I am targeting the Christmas Tree birds, sometimes, rarely, the birds fly down into the field that I set up on, but mostly they fly down into the woods behind where I set up.  Since I spooked them so badly yesterday, I figured they would be field shy today and I decided to set up in the woods near where they usually roost.  I snuck in at 4:30, hunched over like a deer, went to a big tree, and queitly sat down, gun on my knee and NEVER moved or made a sound after that.

As soon as the hens started their morning chatter, I realized that I wad dead in the middle of their roost, but then, from right above my head, I heard, Gobble, Gobble, Gobble, but you could hear that he tried to squash his own gobble, and he immediatly flew down and into the field.  The ladies continued their chattering and I remained motionless.  They eventually flew into the field as well, and by the time I felt comfortable enough to move, they were all completely gone.  I hope that I haven't messed up their roost for tomorrow, but the gobbler was definately spooked once again.

So, I moved to the state land and tried calling there, no answers except for that darn Peacock, and guess what?  This time, he showed up in the field.  So, I guess I can officially say that I called in a Peacock I'll try post a picture later when I get home from work.

Anyway, left the state land and moved to the swamp because those two jakes were in field number one.  I got to the swamp field, # 3, and used my new gobbler call, along with a kind of box call I bought in PA last September.  Well, this time instead of just ruffling their feathers, I had both boys fanning and strutting for me, but still at about 80 yards, which is probably 100 with my poor distance judgement.  They then went into the woods with 4 hens, although one hen, I believe a Jenny was enticed enough to cross the field and walk straight towards me.  I had hoped that the rest would follow her, but they did not.  WHen she was close enough for me to hit with a rock, how's that for distance judgement? she turned to my left and kept walking down the field.

So, no bird for me today, but certainlly an eventful morning

Maybe Ken has a  recipe for them?

You have to put cherry juice on them and roast over a fire  on a spit, like Harrison Ford did in 6 days and 7 nights, For that blonde Ann Heche.

My peacock . . .

And with all of the excitement with missing the two birds yesterday, I forgot to mention that I saw a doe that was missing the bottom half of her front left leg.  She crossed the road in front of me and seemed to be handling her disability well.  She had not been bread this season, perhaps because of her injury.
