Thought this might be useful to anyone who was thinking about checking a turkey there this week.

Ralph can be a p.i.t.a. at times.  After 34 years in this state trying to run a small business (especially selling guns here!), watching the laws, taxes and buffoons enforcing them change during that period of time, he has every right to bitch.  Add to that a pickup truck outside, with 4 guys trying to check in the same doe, or some guy telling him to hurry up and check their turkey because they're in a rush, all for a measly $.85 each from the state. I don't think many of us would do that either. That's why he's getting into the antique business.  I guess all those old ladies on the "Road Show" are easier to deal with than us.

The geniuses that screwed up the Millstone River by removing the dam and placing the god-awful weir downstream from him have led to him getting flooded on an annual basis instead of about every 6-8 years, yet he dries out, restocks and stays open.
Any time I've needed something from Ralph he either has it, can get it, or will come up with some alternative that has never failed me.
I don't blame Ralph at all for his attitude.  He's one of the last of a breed. The small outdoors store that we say we love so much, then we go on to herald the possible arrival of Cabelas and Bass Pro.

I've watched Ralph spend an hour helping a clueless parent set up their kid with their first fishing rod, then take them right out the front door and show them how to use it in the river.  I've seen more FREE worms, salmon eggs or lures go out that door than you would think from someone who's "attitude suxx".  Watch him when his grandkids are in the store. You'll never see a nicer guy, and I've seen him act that way with other people's kids as well.

An outdoor store in that area is sorely needed, and Ralph has provided that for over 34 years.  All he needs is his internet access, lots of cigarettes, coffee and an ear to listen to how screwed up this state is, and he'll take care of your fishing or hunting needs.

HuntfishNJ-

You obviously know Ralph well, as do I.  He is gruff on the outside sometimes, but you are right.  He will give you the shirt off his back if you are his friend.  He is very loyal to his friends.  He is a genuinely good guy and what he has to put up with is a pain in the ass.  I have taken my daughters in there with me for fishing stuff over the years, since they were very small.  He always gives them free stuff and even had their pictures up in his store.  If you bought your bow from him he will work on it for hours and doesn't charge a DIME for his labor.  He IS the last of a dying breed and when all of the Mom and Pop stores are gone we will miss them.  That is a vanishing part of America.  Replaced by Corporate Stores who don't know you and couldn't give a crap.  You could always go into Millstone Sport Shop and have a shot or a beer while you talk about hunting and fishing or politics or anything else.  Pretty good place as far as I am concerned.
