I was hunting on May 10, 2008 in North Jersey.  It was getting light, real foggy.  I put up my blind and started heading to the field to put up my decoys. I put the first one up and as I stuck the stake in for the second one I heard a gobble across the field through the fog.  I ran back to my blind, on the way heard another gobble.  Got into the blind set up the chair, grabbed the call, and layed my 1187 across my knees.  I purred and made a couple of yelps.  Then I stayed quiet for 10 minutes and tried again.

I remembered reading on here that when it is wet and foggy the birds don't gobble much, so I called again and then stayed quiet.  About 30 minutes later O heard "funny noises behind me, crap I had to turn.  I peaked out of the window, and saw a hens head looking in my direction.  She walked to my left a little, made some noise, they stayed still.  She then walked back to my right.

I skrunched down in my chair staying below the windows, and dropped to one knee.  I rested my left elbow on my left knee and peeked up a little, this time I was a beard and a blue head.  It was a TOM!!

He turned away from me and followed the hen.  I put the gun out of the window.  He was in my sights, but walking away with his head down.  I took the safety off slowly.  He walked left to right, left to right, then his head went up and POW!!!

She ran off, and he dropped wings flapping.  I put the gun on safety and fast walked up to him.  He was down.  Neck was broke, but mouth was moving open and closed no sound.  Yes!!!  I forgot my radio that morning to I made call to my buddy who I was hunting with.  Hey Dave. what next, do I grab the legs, ring its neck, grab the neck and the legs?  he said ah, I don't know never got one.  So I saw he was still, I wnet back and packed up my stuff.  After about 5 to 10 minutes  walked up to the bird, of course gun loaded and when I got to within about 20 yards he flapped his wings, head down, I thought he was taking off, so I shot again.. dumb beginner mistake.  I took some feathers off, and skinned the back of his neck.  He was dying with the first shot.

Found out later what I should have done.. now I know.

I met a cool guy up there Rich.  He is a hunter instructor, nice guy.  We talked for a bit untli my other buddy showed up and we went and checked the bird in.

17lbs

3/4 spurs

It was very tasty.  A couple buddies made a nice meal.  The tail I am doing on my own.  The middle feather is broke... so I will have to figure something out.  I bought the wood mount from Dick's Sporting goods.  Borax.. cleaned the feather stems... and put the beard in the shell I used.  I will post pics in a couple of weeks when I hope to be finished.

Here are the pics of my first turkey fan (I tried).  Again, second shot (not needed) took the tail feather.  This is my first mount.  I hope it lasts a little.  I followed the instruction from the NWTF website and bought the wood from Dicks.  I will have a little plate engraved with date time, area, weight, spur length, and beard.

Would have looked better had I not carried it at my waist and not taken the second shot.  When I first went over to the bird I couldn't believe how nice the feathers were....were.

Sorry I didn't catch this story sooner.  Congrats on your first bird, and welcome to the single minded, totally obsessed, one track minded (at least for 6 weeks) group of insane turkey hunters.  Now that you have one under your belt, your quest will be never-ending, but your rewards will also be never-ending.

And by the way, your tail mount looks fantastic, it has lots of character and just begs for a story to be told.

Great job lungbuster
