NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 13 / Record New Jersey Buck (Guess His Score)

Story Line:

17 years ago I hunted this buck for two years with the bow (I was 12 years old).  This was the largest NJ deer I have ever seen alive or harvested.  This buck was a backyard monster from Somerset County.  I only saw him twice from the stand at more than 50 yards away in a 2 year timeframe.  Besides these pictures of him in a front lawn on a Sunday.

He was never taken and I assume he died of old age.  The pictures are poor quality becasue they are so old.

What you say he scores?  Keep in mind he was more than 250 pounds so the pictures do not do him justice.  Look at the length of the browtines!

Definitely not a record but a really nice buck.  NJ non-typical records are over 200 in both gun and bow catagories.  Bow has 21 points and was killed by Daryll Capps in Wall Township.  That deer I would say is in the 170's or 180's

Never heard of that deer and I have lived in Wall my whole life. Whole family is from Wall and have hunted this area since I would say the 50's at least.   You have any pics I would love to see a photo and hear the story.

He is not #1 but he is a record (Top Ten).

If this deer was shot in 2001 and entered into the Deer Classic can you post a picture?  I am sure it is not the same deer.

Nice! The Jersey suburbs really can grow some monsters. I have seen some slammers up here in Bergen Cty.

Tough to tell what he has for points from the pics..looks like a main frame 8 with 2 drops.

The right antler may not be a drop though just a main beam drooping down.

In any case hes  in the 160's just as an 8 add in what junk I can see and say 175 ish

The pictures were taken from a VHS video.  After reviewing the tape he has 13-14 scoreable points and 18inch browtines with an amazing spread.  This would put him in the high 180's.

Either way he is amazing NJ Backyard deer.

I am not in any way trying to compare your deer to the current record.  It's an awesome deer in it's own right.  Hopefully that deer spread some genetics arround for the future herd for you. Fantastic buck either way.

That is a quality buck by anyone's standards.  This is yet another example of the type of quality bucks New Jersey could have if we were to implement a more rational tag system that would allow more bucks to survive to maturity i.e. 4-5 years old.
Posted:  09 May 2008 7:45 AM
I agree wwp.  I'm not sure if any of you go to the deer classic but several deer of this quality get killed every year.  Can u imagine if we revised the tag system and made a 5 points on one side system

Alot of 1.5 year old bucks are getting shot with the 3 on one side system and these are exactly the deer that we don't want to be getting shot.  Very few 1.5 year olds will get 5 on one side so this would protect them.

Antler restictions do not work...

5 to a side is wayyyyy unreasonable.  I have seen 4.5 year old 8pts that would never be legal under that plan

The real answer is to use a system that many other states already use.....and that is to limit deer hunters to ONE buck a year no matter what weapon they are using

PA is doing 4 on one side in the Western portion of the state.

There are alot of problems with antler restrictions. On my farms we will only shoot an 8 pt if he is 4.5 or older.  This year I have pictures of 5 different deer that will go over 110 and they all made it through One was a 9 point non typical that was almost impossible to pass on

When this deer was shot by Darrell T. Capps of Bridgeton NJ, his horn were a lot more wierd than the above photos and his score was (All time #1 in the state for bow non-typicals 203 3/8 killed in 2000,) shot in Cumberland county. Almost nine years later. I don't think they are the same deer.
