NJ Hunter / New Jersey Small Game & Waterfowl Hunting / Waterfowl / Looking for Lab pup
Posted:  31 Mar 2008 10:05 PM
I'm in North Jersey and looking for an English Lab pup.  Anyone know where I can find a good breeder?  I would like to stay in NJ or PA.  Any info on them in general would be helpful.  I've been a Setter guy all my life and don't know much about Labs.  I don't duck hunt to often, but would like a good water retriever.

i just picked up an english lab from a breeder in VA. it was a 5 hour drive but its a nice easy drive to do in a day. he is 9 weeks old and very smart and loves and i mean loves to retrieve. she has some othert pups still and is expecting some more litters. she has been doing this for 20 years. pm me if you are interested and ill give you the info.

If njbowhunter72 is speaking of DeeprunRetrievers near Fredericksburg, I'll vouch for them. I have bought two American field bred labs from them ... both outstanding dogs. Extremely athletic ... like a larger GSP.

The English style dogs are a recent addition for them. But, as you can see from their website, they should be great hunters and companions.

DeepRun gives all their pups time in crates, so both of my 8 week old pups had no problem on the long rides home. I even came home the long way each time .... heading west to I-81 and coming home through Pa .... just to stop and play with the pup near woods on the way home (instead of crappy I-95).

Good luck.

Try DeCoverly Kennels in PA.  I know it's a setter breeder but their trainer is a lab breeder.  Call DeCoverly and ask for Bridget, she is the lab breeder.  I've seen a bunch of her dogs and they were all nice.

As I said I am new to the Lab world.  Maybe English is not what I am looking for.  I think I have the terms confused. They seem to be the square, big head, short muzzle, wide as a coffee table type like the one in the picture.  Nice looking dog, but not what I'm loking for.  I want a more sleek, athletic dog with lots of game drive.
Thank you to those that replied.  I'll look at Deep Run and also Decoverly.  I didn't know they had Labs.  They are very famous for their Setters.

english is what i have and american is what you want . american has that long skinny nose and very different bodys. english is built like a pit bull and a american is much smaller.

Actually, an "English" Lab is one born in England.  An "American" Lab is one born in the USA.  The proper terms are Show/Bench bred and Field bred Labradors. You see, there are English dogs which run field trials and American dogs that are shown in dog shows.  When you talk to breeders tell them you are looking for a field bred dog or even an upland Lab. I don't have Labs but know some breeders of nice field labs.  They are great dogs. I think that's what you want.  If you are used to setters, you may be disappointed with a bench bred Lab.  Send me a PM and I will send you some info. I've added a picture of a field bred Lab.

I got my boy from Skyline in Kirkwood, NY.  Four hour drive from Bergen County, but he's keen and can spot @ bird well beyond my vision.  Don and his Wife breed for Fox red labs.  Yellows can be anywhere from "white to fox red in the AKC guidelines.  My guy has a brother whose owner posts here, and I'm sure he'll jump in with allocolades for Don.  Worth a phone call to talk with them.  They are very personable and not breeding for $, but for love of the breed!   Good Luck!

English style yellow lab ....
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb294/OldCoot_2007/hero4.jpg If from good hunting stock, can be great waterfowlers. Their stockiness is a liability while flushing birds. Though, many older hunters happily take the fields with them.

American style yellow lab ....

Thinner, taller, more athletic .... demons in the hunting fields, in addition to waterfowling.

Good luck.

the one on the bottom looks like a skinny english lab. I thought american labs had more of a pointy snout

I have been doing a lot of looking around on the net and it seems to be the opposite.  The American or Field is the larger dog.  Tall and slender.  The English/Bench is short and stocky.

You're right, Uplander. Tall and slender ... but powerfully built. I had one that was 100 pounds, another was a runt of the litter that barely weighed 70 pounds.

(That 68 pound "runt" was the best dog I ever had)

english are for sure short and stocky. my male is 90 and my female was a solid 70 in her prime. However the english in my eyes is the biggest . Built like a bull with that beauti of a big square head.

They get cancer I think more than other breeds to. All my friends have lost dogs to cancer and a lot in their prime but especially chocolates for some reason. It could be that they feed them table food that adds to it maybe and let them get fat and don't keep the dog lean enough.
