I would like to book a trip to hunt Whitetails next year.  I would like to find a great place that I can drive to from NJ to save on Air Fare.  I was thinking of finding a place in Ohio.

Does anybody have any suggestions that I could research?  Thank you for the help.

better off flying because the more west you get the more expensive gas gets...plus driving out there and then coming home...you will spend the same amount on a plane ticket...

You only save a little bit by driving. If your going with an outfitter and don't need to lug Treestands and stuff then I wouyld fly. If your going to need to hang stands and bring food and coolers then drive.
If you drive to the midwest. (Illinois, Iowa, Missouri plan on being on the road at least 15 - 20 hours each way.
Flying takes 3 hours. Each way.
Drive 850 miles at 18 MPG = $150 one way. ($300 round trip).
I paid $267 to fly out last year.
If you are with 3 - 4 guys then you'll split gas and save a bundle.

What is the name of the place in NC?
Posted:  15 Feb 2008 1:25 PM
If you are going to drive and make the effort, go to Golden Triangle Outfitters in illinois. It's the only place worth the drive. Only place in illinois that doesn't let the guides hunt the property. Be carefull, most illinois outfitters are rip offs,I had Hadley Creek hose me a couple years ago

I hear guys ,even with gas prices, saying that driving is the way to go. They all say that the airlines beat them up on the baggage fees & getting animals back is a breeze. We met guys a harriburg that go up to Canada & say that the shipping for deer alone is more than they would pay for gas 1 way.

I have flown before and will not do it again.  Getting stuff back is a hassle.  Driving to Manatoba in May for a bear hunt.

Stay away from Hadley Creek is good advice.  Apparently, one of their guides was convicted of poaching. Check the following starting on page two:

I went to southern Ohio last year for a 2 day gun season:
http://www.southernohiooutfitters.com/

Nice place, reasonable and he gets some very nice bucks especially during bow season.  The weather didn't cooperate for us though.  I'm going back again this season, its about a 550 mile hike from Nutley NJ, not too bad.

i've flown many times out of newark with both guns and bows and it was never a problem. all you have to do is tell them you are checking in a gun when you check in. the airline employee will put the tags on the gun case then walk you over to the tsa area where a tsa agent will open the case, inspect the case in front of you, then they'll take the gun from there. that's it. you even put the ammo inside the case with the gun. the biggest problem with flying with is not even with centerfires but with muzzleloaders as you can't put anymuzzleloading powder or pellets on the plane. you have three choicesne is to buy your pellets or powder when you get to your destination. second is to order your powder and dropship it to your outfitter. lastly, if you weigh loose powder like i do, you can weigh out your charges then load them into .45-70 cases, using only hand pressure to seat cheap lead bullets which then become your powder tubes during your hunt. you then are allowed to take these "loaded ammunition" onto the plane as checked baggage.

When was this 20 years ago? Not on todays gas prices

Usually if it's west of the Mississippi River I'll fly, East of it I'll drive.
I drive on all self guided hunts. Too much gear is needed.

Ohio is definately an easy drive. I use to drive to Illinois but now I fly into St. Louis, rent a car, and drive the last 90 minutes or so to the farms I hunt.

From NJ, most West Central Illinois farms will be about a 900-1000 mile drive. If you can get 15 miles to the gallon you will need about 135 gallons of gas to make the round trip. That is $405 for gas, not to mention tolls and the wear and tear on your vehicle. It will take you 15 - 17 hours each way. If you stay overnight on the way, add in the cost of the motel.

If you fly, expect to pay anything from $175 to over $300 for airfare, plus a rental car if needed that could cost another $200 - $300 for a week. There are closer local airports, but you will get your best deals on airfare and rental cars from major airports like St Louis or Chicago.

So which way you travel depends on how many guys are going with you, and how much you value your time.

Illinois use to be about the farthest most guys wanted to drive. With todays high gas pricres, many of the clients I book are now flying out to Illinois, unless they have a big group (3-5) then driving can still make sense.

If I can help you plan a trip to Illinois, let me know. The outfitter I book for is:
Illinois Trophy Bowhunters

There are more and more outfitters in Ohio offering inexpensive hunts for quality whitetails. I have seen some outfitters at the shows, but I have no experience with any of them. If you end up in Ohio, let me know how you did, and who you hunted with.
