Got a daylight picture of the 7 pointer I've been after since winter bow kicked in. I have a bunch of other pics. of bucks still with both antlers from 2/2-2/8. They seem to be holding them longer this year.

you guys are supposed to be manageing the deer in branchburg.so why dont you shoot more does(like the locals) ,instead of a buck that will be a real shooter next year.

We have shot truckloads of does...truckloads. And we still have more work to do. If a guy takes out 8-10 does a year as a management tool and we are meeting harvest objectives, the harvest of the occasional buck keeps everyone happy, is legal, and is not asking too much.
And yes, that buck will be a real shooter next year

I spotlighted a bunch of deer with full racks the other day.

When do you guys set up your trail cameras ?

I think I am going to be putting mine out in July this season and let them sit all year, aside from ones that I put out over scrapes.

this is the type of buck you want to pass up.if you want to take an occasional buck shoot the many scrubs that are around with bad genetics.

osod20ga,
Are you from Readington/Branchburg? If so, I'm sure our paths have crossed. Welcome to the site.

born and raised in the area and have noticed the size of the bucks are getting smaller in the last few years,3 1/2 year olds are the ones that should be taken along with does.i average 15 does per year with no bucks taken unless a 3 1/2 year old slips up.

Seen 6 buck all full rack tonight in zone 12 Looks good for next year  Hey outdoorsaddiction what part of 12 was it shot in I had a big 7 I was hunting in Ringoes area ???
Posted:  11 Feb 2008 7:32 PM
You know guys,osod20ga is right. Start diciplining yourself to always shoot something larger than your last and yuo'll see deer like that seven everyday instead of once in a while. The reason jersey doesn't have alot of bruisers is most guys shoot them before they're 3 1/2

it was in hopewell area bout 5 miles from ringoes

OK guys just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here. All this talk about passing the buck for next year. Well wackem and I have been passing them the past 2 years and that will soon stop. We harvest every mature doe that gives us a clean, ethical shot. Problem is that when passing the bucks we have had most of them killed by vehicles or poached. We hunt zone 12 and yes, poaching is a problem. But more of a problem is the vehicle collisions. Its a nice theory to pass them but I feel if there is not significant land away from high traffic areas you are wasting you time. AN example is we had 10 bucks last year we passed and in the past few weeks while walking the neighborhoods I have found 7 of them dead. Tack on this past seasons kills due to EHD and next year will be slim pickings. So although "let them go so they grow" may sound good I think you must apply your selctiveness to many other uncontrolled factors.

The latest I have ever seen a deer hold antlers is on St. Paddy's day.  Saw one in Chatham Twp (Morris County) about 7 years ago that still had his rack.  It stood out as it was all white.  But at the same time, biologists at The Great Swamp have seen some bucks drop their antlers by late November....

half rack, alright you found seven dead and then you kill the other three how many do you have left for next year."0". if you continue with your program at least three made it for next year.in my book three are better then none. ihave been on controlled hunts that killed them all and the hunting is far from good.the hunting was good when buck to doe ratio was 1 buck to two does roughly.but then all the two year old bucks started to get shot and now you have all scrubs breeding. there is no future for you trust me.

osod20ga,

Listen, I agree with the buck to doe ratio stuff and agree on the let them grow BUT here it is only Feb 12th and I have found 7 of the 10 dead. So the other 3 may or may NOT make it through to next season. Now if I had taken 1 of the 10 then there were 9 left to make it through. If the same 3 make it  am I better off. I don't agree with killing them all, never said I did. The point I was making is that "other UNCONTROLLABLE" situations may influence how much "quality Management" one can accomplish. This is the 2nd year that this trend has continued. Last year found about 90% of the bucks I passed either killed by cars or poached.

i know about the uncontrollables such as corn piles in back yards(deck shoots i call them),cars, etc. you cannot control these things but we can control ourselves.  i have watched these trends as well but 10% is still better 0%

and half rack, do remember when the old timers said you cant eat horns(size of buck didnt matter) ,well you still cant.stick with your program and thin the does they dont have horns.horns are made for stirring soup and i have a big bowl.

"Halfrack" I feel your pain, I used to hunt a peice devided by two major highways and the full moons of october and november brought many fatalities. But every bit of management helps, you just may not notice it until 3 or 4 years down the road. I remember thinking "Where did that big deer come from" and then he hit the ground.
