WOW!! If your dog found 38,you must have picked up at least 20 yourself, im guessing?Out of 60 sheds you must have some awsome antlers. What was your biggest last year? Now i know why i cant find any bone there, also how many hours a week would you say you shed hunt?

Here is my dog with some of last year sheds that he found. The largest is a matched set that will score 165 Non-Typical with a 16" spread credit. These were all found in Allaire state park and Turkey swamp park.

did you start him as a pup shed huntng?
Posted:  07 Feb 2008 7:01 AM
Yea It started as a game He would find some of my antlers lying around the house so I started hiding them in the backyard everytime he would find one I would give him a treat dogs will do anything for food.He would rather shed hunt now than bird hunt he was peppered bird hunting by another hunter when he was young so he is not as happy bird hunting anymore.

Ken, do you ever shed hunt in the Mill?
Posted:  07 Feb 2008 9:18 AM
Sometime I take kenji(dogs name) in the swamps if they are dry. I find shed in the swamp that goes from Lake Success to the powerlines out to 571 but it gets real thick and makes it hard for even the dog. I do most of my shed hunting in parks where there is no hunting or area that are not open to hunting. I have the best luck in Allaire

That's really neat.  A great way to find sheds that we would probably miss without the dog, I imagine.  That picture shows about how many sheds I have found......In my life!  For one year that is unbelieveable.  My next dog will definitely be taught to do that.  Nice job!

That is awesome  Id love to get a dog one day to train to shed hunt.  Getting out in late winter and walking for miles looking for sheds is one of my favorite things to do.  Id would be great to have a dog to make those walks more efficient.

Does the dog smell the sheds?  Find them by sight?  How long did it take you to train him?

He find them by smell I guess they have there own odor because he has found everything from fresh drops to antlers that have been out in the woods for awhile. It took about 6 month to train him. I started with letting him play with them in the house when he was young. then hiding sheds in the backyard.then I started taking him  for walks in the woodsto look. I give him a treat after he finds them.

my dog does the same thing. i take her out for a walk in the woods and she constantly brings me back bones, skulls, and sheds. she used to run my property up in vernon and every time she would bring back something.
maybe ill take her for a walk in allaire now that i live in central jersey to she what she finds.

bowhunter444-

Do you believe that virtually any dog could be taught to do this?  Or do you think certain types are naturally better than others?  Just curious.

found this online:

Shed Dog Training

i read somewhere that almost any dog can do it. the article has a lab, a german shepard, and a pitbull. the pitbull was doing the best in the article.

Very cool. Thanks for the pic. The only thing I ever trained to shed hunt was
littlelou. He finds them by sight though.

what i used to do is keep like the skulls and bones as well as some sheds in my dogs normal areas outside at home in the backyard and everytime she would go get one i would praise her. so every time i went into the woods either hunting or for a walk with her she would find them and know to keep looking for them and get praised evertime she found one. dont have woods for a backyard anymore but she still goes to my closet and pulls one out and getss all excited.

jrhunt-

Did you use fence wire for the traps?  I used those one year and got a couple small sheds.  It was fun to try.

found a matched set today...tied together.  I guess somebody lost their rattling antlers.  It was enough to get that feeling though seeing bone on the ground

Took the family up to Camelback snow tubing yesterday and while driving up 78 West I saw many deer feeding along the road and woods.  2 were bucks running along the highway that both still had their racks. Both small, 4 or 6 pointers.  But I guess that means alot of them still are holding their headgear.  I was a little surprised.

I think my shorthair my be able to find sheds.I gave him one as a puppy to chew on as a bone, and now i have to hide them all. They do have there own weird smell, i have one from 2 years ago that stills smells like when i first found it just not as powerfull of a smell.I whent once this year in my small area that had 2 nice racks running around and 3 dinkers, had a pic of all five on the bait with only 1 8pt with a rack, looked but nothing.
Posted:  24 Feb 2008 4:24 PM
Is anyone still seeing rack bucks?  Has anyone else found sheds yet?
Posted:  24 Feb 2008 4:29 PM
I found a small 2pt. shed on Thursday morning.
Posted:  24 Feb 2008 5:20 PM
