I got my 1st deer in zone 3! Just started bow-hunting late in the season(extended bow actually).I started winter-bow on the 1st and on the 9th,I GOT MINE BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL.......Anyway,I have seen bucks and I've seen many more does.Tell me if I'm wrong, but aren't the older, wiser bucks mostly nocturnal by now???I'm sure after running into a few hunters, they realize that the night time is the right time.....right? ![]() __________________ "One of my favorite sounds is the silence of the woods"

Thanks man!!It was a shed......I thought it was a doe(did'nt look pregnant).......I shot it at 5:10pm and after 3 trips into the woods(once more that night and twice the next day)......I found him...about a 150lb shed.I ended up with 42lbs of meat and the hooves are hardening to be a bow-holder....my kids idea......lol
I was so glad to find him but a lil bummed it was a not a doe.........know what I mean? Thanks again,P.J.(CAMO MAN) __________________ "One of my favorite sounds is the silence of the woods"

First let me start off by saying Congrats. Heck of a job shooting a deer with the bow late in the season. Now onto my questions.
Quote:
I found him...about a 150lb shed.I ended up with 42lbs of meat Was this 150 lbs dressed out? And if it was, where did the rest of the meat go? For me, I usually get approximately 50-60% of meat from each deer. Who did the butchering? Just curious. David __________________ NJ... Where fun comes to die!

well, as per my hunting partner who is much more experienced than me,he said it felt like 150lbs....I would say that was accurate.......we dragged this bastard half a mile!!!Not dressed yet...I gutted it at work(with my buddy at work, who hunts)before bringin it to Jimmy the Butcher in Hawthorne,nj.Actually, he told me I didn't really loose any meat. Maybe he snaked some meat on me .......lol!
I was told by an older guy(who heard the about my deer at Franks Tackle) that he respected the fact that I went in 3 times to find it,.......That made me feel pretty good......He wasn't impressed by a non antlered buck.......sheesh! __________________ "One of my favorite sounds is the silence of the woods"

wasn't judging by the drag.............my buddy's 1st guess was 140-150lbs, and check in,(Franks Tackle)said maybe a lil more...not dressed yet.............even the butcher, who saw it after it was dressed said it felt like 100-120lbs when he got it..........anybody else want a piece o'me!?!?!

Congrats !!
Nothing like your first bow kill. Well, for me, every bow kill is like my first. I get all excited over a doe, make fun of me if you must, but whatever, I love it. No, not all bucks are completely nocturnal, but you may not see them until near last light, depending on where abouts on your land you are set up. Field edges are ok, but for bucks, try to get back in the woods a bit. That should increase buck sightings, as most bucks dont enter fields until about dark, but they will linger around in-woods staging areas during daylight hours. They leave their beds, head to the destination feed source, but, they hold up in in-woods stading areas, browse and bit then bed up until they are ready to enter a field. Look for oak tree flats near crop fields or a watering source and set up upwind of them. If you treat your proeprty right, the bucks that are not already naturally nocturnal, should not become nocturnal. Congrats again....... __________________ When a gun-hunter sees the animal he wants- the hunts over. When a bow-hunter sees the animal he wants, the hunt is just begining !

I've Hunted that area for over 20 years...Not a lot of deer in there but they are some bigg'uns in there! I found a shed antler there about 5 years ago now that is 4 1/4" at the base. It'a a tree point shed. I'd seen him a few times too. real old timer too never did get him. __________________ Hunt with a Vizsla, Cause life's to short to hunt with an ugly dog!

i saw a nice rack last thurs....older,thick neck and heavy belly...came up on him and he had to escape down a steep decline, but before he could take off, he had to look for a path.....he never turned to look at me.I had my bow, arrow nocked, couldn't shoot at anything but his ass so I watched him run down the hill and pick his lane through the trees.........It made the whole walk worth it.....cool shit.....i tell ya............ __________________ "One of my favorite sounds is the silence of the woods"

My two longest drags and one cold water crossing happened off of east shore drive. The boys showed up in Apirl after that one. __________________ Pro-baiter
