Just a word to the wise (and all others as well).  If you are going to hunt Assunpink WMA, for your own mental hygiene, use a climber and take it with you when you leave.  I had a ladder stand disappear this winter.  I knew I shouldn't have bought the one with legs.  Between this and the cases of the self distructing vehicles that always seem to damage themselves while in the WMA, I won't be returning.  So it appears the Anti's may just get what they want; A sickly, starving, overpopulated, undernourished herd of deer dying in front of their eyes, in their back yards and on the roads ("not my Mercedes!".

Well, I hope whoever took it gets to enjoy using it (and I also secretly hope that all the deer they poach- er, I mean shoot from it give them horrible diarrhea!).

How does Lo-Jack for treestands sound?  Any takers?  Many of us already have GPS's.  We could make it an add-on for the GPS.  That would make for some interesting confrontations!  Knock knock!!

Strange thing was the ladder stand was within 100 yards of two hang ons I had set up, and neither of those were touched.  Oh well.  Now I'll use my climber and not worry.  Lesson learned.

Anyway, how did you do at AWMA?  You can PM me if you prefer.

I just don't understand why you guys don't realise someone is going to take your stand and you have to take it in and out.

Sorry they took it but I lost 7 stands in a year before I refused to leave one out. It was harder but I got around it. I used the bolts from easy steps and bolted trees and took the steps off and on and had 2 ropes. One to pull the stand up a lock on and the other rope to pull the bow up. I used a climbing rope around my waste to hold me close to the tree and it worked for me. I can't climb like that now so things are a little differant.

Cat the only reason I leave  those stands there is that I have a Herniated disc in my back and a climber in the the back Kills me. I usually hunt at least a mile back. Thats why

I hear you I really do but some scab is going to snag it. If they hunted it and left it alone it wouldn't be bad but they have to steal them. What about a ground blind? I don't think anywhere in the world we can go without getting something stolen. I used get my traps stolen and it was common practice to go look for your traps and steal them back. That was my first experiance getting things stolen in the woods when I was a boy.

It really sucks but it happens everywhere. If you leave a stand in a PA Gameland, same as your WMA, consider it donated.

Happened to me in Allamuchy.

Fortuneately for me, the stand I happened to be hunting was only about 200 yards away, and I saw the truck stop by my van. I got the license plate # and the make of the green SUV as he passed by me on the road out. Turned out he twisted my Windshield wipers--Guy had hunting stickers all over the back of the truck-His info was given to the P.D. but never heard anything. fortuneatley, my brother is a mechanic and fixed the mess for the cost of new wipers.

Just a question do you guys lock your stands up at all?  Or are they easdy pickens for the theives?

Only reason i ask is b/c I will be hunting assumpink next year but hate using my climber.  If they dont bother the stands with the locks I'll be OK b/c I lock all my stands up with 1/2" chain and a lock but if need be I'll go purchase a new climber b/c I dislike my loggy.

Tom,
I've not had a stand stolen in 5 years. I use a standard lock on and use a cable lock around the stand in the tree. I then remove the bottom 7 pegs when ever I go out. That leaves any potential thief about 12' short of the first step.

All I need to get in the tree is 7 pegs, and the holes are already there. So I'm in in a matteer of one or two minutes with little effort.

If a thief wants to bring in his own pegs and a hack saw, and spend the next hour sawing through a braided locking cable, He's welcome to the $19.00 lock on he'll get for his troubles-I honestly think the lock and cable costs more than the stand

Yea I have 4 or 5 lock ons like that and thats what I was planning on using.  I think I should be fine LOL.

Next year I will have to pick up a ton of pegs for all my lock ons.

I hunt the Assunpink pretty regularly in the late season and I got to tell ya I'm surprised more aren't stolen. There are dozens and dozens of stands in every piece of woods. There's everything from the $30 lock-ons to the deluxe ladder that have to cost 3 bills, and some of them abandoned. Even found one that had a couple hundred bucks worth of portable ladders leading up to it. For the amount of non-hunters I meet there on my Sunday scouting trips, I personally wouldn't leave anything in those woods.

I had 3 stands in the immediate area.  2 cheap-o lock ons, and one medium cost ladder stand.  All were locked up; the hang ons with a cable and cheap lock, and the ladder stand with a 1.5" chain with a super heavy high strength lock on it.  They wanted that ladder stand.

I always had the view that if one of my hang ons was stolen, it would be a cheap lesson learned.  I did not expect to find the ladder stand missing.  I was partially relieved that I didn't have to carry the damn thing out!

My opinion: leave a cheap-o there, locked up.  It's usually not worth the effort for them to even try to steal it, and even if they do, what are you out? $30?  Not that cost is the only thing here, but it hurts more when it costs more.

Agreed I have a few pricey stands but they wont see public land.  I may end up just purchasing a new climber anyhoot if the lands are that bad!

I came across a top of the line ladder in the corner of a peice, equipped with a pvc feeder & trail cam. I was pretty far from any parking area but I couldn't help thinking geesh, this is the Assunpink. There's an army of small gamers there every Saturday and just almost as many non-hunters on Sunday. One day I was in the area and it was gone, I assumed the owner took it out.

I think it because the pieces there are so small and there is no fear of getting lost. There's a bunch of stands in the mill also but they're all within 100 yards of a road. The mill is huge, there's a couple of spots where the woods strech for miles so people are afraid of getting lost. Not so at the Assunpink.

I used to hunt assunpink as well and my feeders kept getting shot and they kept putting my pull rope in knots. Also they did something to my feeder because the deer would just look at while walking past and would not touch it. It is a shame because this is being done by other hunters.

the only time i ever hunted assunpink was when i used to bird hunt..but if i deer hunted that i would NEVER leave a stand there.

Ive bird hunted assunpink for the past 8 years. I always see alot of stands but they are usually close to the road and the fields they stock. I wouldnt leave nothing there. How is the deer hunting there? I would think with all the small game going on they move deep to the thick stuff.
