Posted:  23 Jan 2008 10:02 AM   Last Edited By: Dragthor
This is my first doe on county property this year...I am not on a team so i dont have to show all that other stuff...I took this picture with my cell phone so the tag is a little bit harder to see but it is there...

I was in the stand on Saturday afternoon...About 4:29 i hear movement behind me.  I slowly turn my head and see this little doe walking in...I have the gun hanging on a hook next to me...I wait for her head to turn and slowly take the gun off the hook and she busts me...So now we are both staring at eachother.  She turns to run i sad oh well put the gun up real fast waited for a open shot as she was slowly trotting away and bang...Rolled her right over...Done deal...We are eating her tonight for dinner...Maybe a 30 yrd shot...I was using my 11-87 3 inch and a turkey choke with winchester OOO buck...

What are you apologizing for ? Beause she is young ?

Its ok to take a young doe now and then.

When you shoot doe for doe management, taking mature doe is the goal.

However, say your management quota is 10 doe, taking 10 mature doe would mean 30 less deer the next season.

Some spots could use 30 less deer, but for the most part, you are just trying to cut down on numbers so that more food is avaliable to the remaning deer.

So for the 10 doe quota, 5 should be mature doe and the other 5 can be young doe, because you dont count on a young doe dropping 2 fawns for the next year.

Therefore, with 5 mature and 5 young, you can basically figure on 20 less deer for the next season.

These numbers are not set it stone, obviously, depending on current deer numbers the late drop fawns would have been serviced.

Confusing, but I am an idiot, so its hard for me to explain.

GOOD JOB !!

Oh yea man, I can see fresh rubs from the road, just down the street from my house. Also, I have been seeing alot of young deer hit by cars, which would signify that bucks are running the young doe coming into estrous.

You stand a chance of catching a big guy on his feet during legal shooting hours. Good luck, if you can handle it, sit all day this time of year.

Um, depending on your buck count, 99% of the mature doe should have already been serviced, a few exceptions may be comming back in, but, for the most part, the young fawns will be comming into estrous for their first time.

BET YOUR AZZ, that bucks will be on them like a dirty prom date.

This is where management comes into play. Having late drop fawns, means late drop bucks, that dont reach their potential during hunting season, especially in states with short seasons.

Where a "normal drop" buck has had some months to grow antlers, a late drop will be behind the normal drop bucks in their antler growth.

Kind of understand ?

Not only does management mean having the right amount of animals for your lands carry capacity, the correct buck:doe ratio, but also having the animals be on the "same page" so to speak, when it comes to age.

But, yes. Some mature doe will hav enot been serviced during their first 2 estrous cycles and comming in for the third time, rare though.

nice shooting. Next time it might be a nice buck, keep the gun on your lap or front rail of your stand at the ready.

Good job.  As pratice I like to look at the heads of smaller deer to see if I can tell the sexes apart. I suck because from the shape of the head I would have thought that was a button buck.
