Hi fellow hunters. I am not a waterfowler so this might be a stupid question - I know nothing about waterfowl. I was at the local duck pond today with my son and mixed in with the usual Mallards and geese was a duck that was amost all black except for some green (like a male mallard) mixed with black on the head and neck. Anyone know what that was? Haven't seen one like that before. __________________ Bob

| A large percentage of the Black Ducks in NJ are Black Duck/Mallard Hybrids. If the duck you saw had some green in its head its most likely a mix breed... | ||

Hunter that's my guess. It did not look like a picture of the black duck hetley posted. It was practically all black with just that mallard green in it. Maybe it swam through an oil slick.

Did it look anything like this?
That is a pretty common example of a black duck/mallard drake hybrid. Sometimes they have a lot more green on their head than this guy. Hetley75 where did you get that black duck pic? I've never seen a black duck with a green speculum (they are usually violet) or with a grey bill (usually a greenish yellow). Do you know if that is a black duck species other than the American black duck? Could it possibly be a species of Mottled duck? |

Green Wing Teal(female)? My guess I'm pretty sure Hetely75's pic is a green-winged teal hen. Hard to get any type of size reference from the pic but the coloration is right for a hen green-wing. That's why I was curious about where the pic came from. If that duck in his pic is mallard/black duck size then it must be a species of Mottled duck or a species of black duck I've never heard of. It's a good looking duck and a great pic but I'm pretty sure it is a hen green-wing not a black duck. |

| It could have been a domestic duck or a domestic hybrid. There are domestic ducks referred to as black sweedish that are almost entirely black. I have seen black sweedish/mallard hybrids with green heads but they are usually in parks and such. Not very common in the wild. Is the pond a place where people go to feed the ducks. If so it is probably some type of domestic hybrid. | ||

Here is what the black sweedish ducks look like.
Many have less white than this one and if they cross breed with a mallard often have green heads. Here is another domestic that it could have been called a cayuga. They are black and green.

bgood most likly saw a black mallard mix
but the next post The bill on his duck is blue Mallard blacks mix are green or yellow most of the time. mallards are the wore in the waterfowl world. But the bill looks a little wide almost like a drake pintail in color the wing patch is more green than blue and can not see any white speculums. on balck /mallards you should see alittle white even if it is only one. who knows maybe this one has a couple mixed in there you know like most americans all mixed in LOL Maybe this is the first of a true american duck LOL __________________ ACP Wildlife Control Services
