Hopefully we've turned over a new leaf and everyone can get along from here on out. Even when we disagree, we can still be civil towards each other and show one another respect.

We'll be enforcing the rules more than ever now, so be mindful of them whenever you choose to post.

I'd hate to see anyone banned permanently! In my opinion, this is one of the best websites on the internet. Kris and the moderators work very hard to keep it running smooth. I want to see everyone get to enjoy it.

Legend explains concept

Sep 19, 2007 - 04:03:26 CDT
By CHERYL LONG FEATHER
There is a story, attributed to the Cherokee, which serves as an example of the Native perspective of self.

In the story, a grandfather is teaching his young grandson about life by telling him about a great battle that wages between two wolves. These two wolves live inside the heart of every person.

The grandfather tells the grandson that one wolf is evil - full of anger, jealousy, greed, arrogance and hatred. The other wolf is good, with a spirit of love, peace, hope, humility, generosity and laughter. Constantly, the wolves battle to see which wolf will gain dominance.

The grandson considers the situation for a few moments and then asks his grandfather, "Do these wolves live inside my heart as well?"

When the grandfather answers in the affirmative, the young boy asks which one will win. The grandfather replies, "The one you feed."

The legend, while not unique in describing the primordial challenge between good and evil, incorporates the concept of self-control that is central to many Native tribes.

For Native people, the attribute of self-control was acknowledged and revered in the sun dance and the okipa, two of the most complex and demanding ceremonies among the northern Plains tribes.

Self-control was strengthened through more routine practices such as fasting, preparing for giveaways and participating in a sweatlodge ceremony.

The phenomenal ability of Native people to maintain self-control, cited by numerous ethnographers and anthropologists, allowed traditional societies to function without need of punitive systems. The responsibility for good behavior came from within, not from rules or strictures from external entities.

Self-control is the mechanism that feeds the wolves. Those with little self-control allow themselves to remain ignorant, give themselves permission to be angry, justify their jealousy and mask their fear with hatred.

They feed the wolf with carelessness and without thought. They, in turn, encourage others to do the same.

The reality is that self-control is hard work. It requires constant vigilance, introspection, a willingness to sacrificeand a love for peace.

Unfortunately, part of the problem is that as a society, we don't often set our standards high enough to expect self-control. Instead, we make another rule or set another policy or make another example of someone.

Today, it is more important than ever to encourage the attribute of self-control that is central to being a good human being and living in a truly democratic society.

As Americans, we are obsessed with control - but control over all else but ourselves. We want to control everything from the television (from the comfort of our couch, of course) to its contents, from our children's behavior to their school's teacher, from our neighbor's opinion to government officials.

The irony is that control over others is an illusion, while the wolf we feed is alive and well.

Cursing in Spanish (or French or Chinese) is still cursing.

I have my finger in the ban button trigger.  Do you guys and girls really want to see if I'll squeeze it?

Hmmm... I wonder what I am doing to give out the perception that I am stupid.

I don't think anyone thinks you are stupid...maybe something like one of those parents that is just too nice, and might threaten punishment but never actually does it, and the kids always take advantage of them, but not stupid.

Hiking that is an option in your  “my preferences” that you can turn off if you don't like what you are seeing . Simply opted out of viewing the avatars no need to force your sensitive views on everyone on the site. I myself as well as many other site members don’t mind looking at a pretty girl in a bathing suit Well there are two avartars I could live with out Scrubby’s and HUNT1940's I see nothing wrong with the rest and my daughter comes on here to read and post sometimes. If you don’t want your kid to see them be a parent and turn them off, pretty simple
