my hunting club gets to hunt all the somerset county parks. We got to hunt a closed park until 11 o'clock, two days this year, today and in two weeks. they blocked the front gates of the park. we were instructed to do one thing: reduce the deer herd on the island. we set up to do drives at 7. the park is totally closed to hunting, so we werent bothering anyone.

everyone was already up in trees, so we sent in my little brother to set up real quick. my father and i were the drivers. we needed more people, but things worked out, and we ended up shooting 12 deer. my little brother shot a basket 6 (which antlers fell off after shooting it), another guy shot a basket 5 and a guy shot this ten point:

and, of course, i had to help out the "old guys" drag out deer:

and we got blood on the new quad:

then, we went across the canal and did some drives. this time i got to sit. i had 38 does come by along with a nice little 7 pointer and two "wide-as-the-ears" spikes. i passed on all of them and shot a small doe taking up the rear of the group. the guy at the other end of the line saw 2 8's and a 6 and shot this one:

we ended up shooting about 14 there....

by the time all was said and done, it was 10 minutes to 2. i ran home, showered, and went out to my stand. got into my stand at 2:30. saw 9 does and a spike. my dad got home at 3:30 and washed his hands and had a 6 pointer come by at 4 pm. since we cannot remember when the last time he shot a buck, he decided to take it. (i promise he was smiling in the other pics)

2 more guys on the property also shot deer: a 4 point and a doe.

by the time we took all the deer to the butcher and dropped some of them off at other people's houses, it was 8 o'clock. time for lunch/dinner.

it was my first deer on a drive, and the first time all 3 of the boys in my family shot deer. overall, a very long, but fun, day.

Deer cant reproduce if there isnt any bucks to do the deed.  When i hear thin the heard i personally take that as shoot everything runs past you...I have never been on a thin the heard hunt so i really wouldnt know...

Typically on hunts designed to reduce the deer population it is the does that need to be killed.  Reason being is that one buck can service multiple does so it is next to impossible to reduce the herd by just harvesting bucks.

Great job. I thought usually when they ask you to thin the herd you shoot the does? But If they let me shoot the bucks to I'll take advantage of that to!

out of the deer we shot, there were only 4 bucks shot. all three guys that shot bucks also shot does. most of the guys in the club are meat hunters.

the guys who shot the 8 and the 10 both gave me and my father hugs they were so happy and couldn't stop thanking us for driving. the park rangers took pictures with both bucks.

the park commission was very happy with the number of deer taken.

and thank you all for the congratulations, maybe the next time we do drives, i'll tag a nice one. and thanks for the offer to push the next time. i'll ask the president of the club, because i am not sure about the insurance coverage. each member of the club must have 2 million dollars of liability insurance.

Are you still required to abide by game laws (ie...Bag limits)?
