I bought a lab a few months ago from Deep Run Retrievers in VA. It was a top notch place, but I wanted to see if anyone was familar with any dog trainers in the NJ area. My puppy is 6.5 months old now and has had some introduction to pigeons and retreiving while at Deep Run. __________________ Git R Done!

| Don't know of any dog trainers but if you don't mind I will make this suggestion. If you have the time I would recommend training the dog yourself. I trained my dog - a german shorthair - and I could not be any happier. Couple of guys I hunt with did the same with the same results. I used tapes made by a trainer named George Hickok. For the most part only takes about 15 minutes a day. Would also recommend a electronic collar - was the best $250 I ever spent (Tri-Tronics Sport Dog model). Can be frustrating at times but in the end is very rewarding - will also save yourself alot of money. Either way good luck. | ||

if you never used a e collar then watch it. Big difference between a lab and a gsp. I to have a pointer and did most of the training myself. i feel the same way but i used 2 trainers to give me a hand and show me whats right and wrong. I have to numbers i will pm you. Call them and tell them what you want out of your lab. __________________ O.A.

Stagg sre you saying the gsp adjust to the collar easier then a lab or vise vesa. I have a 6 month old gsp and im just wondering im debating on the collar for him or not. I will be sending him out for training in the next couple months but im just wondering what your experience is. __________________ ..._...|..___________________

Introduce that dog to pheasants or what ever it is your hunting as soon as possible. Once they get a nose for it the rest is only as far as you want to take it. If you are like me and just want a dog to find birds and lay on the couch with you then it is not that big of a deal. If you want a show stopper then you better get a trainer.. __________________ "from my cold dead hands"

Just to very different dogs. I grew up with english labs. never hunted them thou. I was just tought by my breeder and a trainer to watch out for he collar at a young age. mine wears one every time we hunt. I never have to use it. only for deer if he chase them or turkey etc.. when i say watch out i mean if not done the right way you could ruien your dog. And if you are training your pointer start him on piegons and quail. dont throw him into pheasants yet. Remember im not a trainer but just giving my opnion as a first time handler myself. check your pm. __________________ O.A.

| Hoyt Hunter -- you will recall that awhile back I sent you a PM about your pup from Deep Run. I have one from them also and I couldn't be happier. If you are serious about training the dog yourself, might I suggest you look into a retriever club? For about $50 it was the best decision I ever made. You should see my 1-1/2 yr old now. Check out this site http://www.navesinkriver-hrc.com/ and if you'd like I'd be happoy to introduce you. These people are experts and have a genuine interest in training labs. | ||

| Hi Hoyt Hunter, We have members from all over the state and so from as far as New York City, PA, and Maryland. The majority of us are avid hunters - looking to train our retrievers for upland and waterfowl. We have club meetings several times a year and also have training sessions both formal and informal each month. I've only joined them last year so I'm a newbie there myself but I've learned a ton of information that's hard to get from books or videos. Many members chose to run NAHRA tests, many do not. We mostly train out of Assunpink and Colliers Mills WMAs - If you're interested I'd be glad to get you to one of our events. Let me know. Good training and good hunting. | ||

| The Tritronics book Retriever Training by Jim and Phylis Dobbs is about he best book and the videos that go along with it show you great demos of how too. Force hold and force fetch as well as basic obedience and beyond are well documented and you are given a progression to follow which i found very helpful. My 11 year old Lab was trained by my wife and I and it was a great experience although frustrating till I found this book and went the e-collar route with my hard headed dog. | ||
