Hitting Zone 2 this Friday (Jan 4th) with the ML. Been a rough year in our part of Zone 2 (near Sussex Airport). How are you finding it this year? Less deer being seen and no racks since bow season. Could this be the culmination of the deer a day plus January cleansing??![]() __________________ NRA Life Member

My trail cam tells me different. I can hunt all day and see 1 or 2 deer. But check my trail cam the next morning and have 20 different deer on the camera.
The deer are smart. They know where to hide. Is the deer herd lower ? Yes. But not as bad as some may think it is. I am talking about the southern part of zone 2 near Andover. JMO __________________ >>>>----> NJH Pro Staffer.

| I hunted all state land yesterday in Zone 2 Vernon and Glenwood, I did not see a deer, I did meet a couple of good guys in Glenwood, they even let me in on a drive and told me about a big deer that was still around. | ||

Hunted Monday morning zone 2 near Vernon. I actually saw more deer in the 3.5hrs walking in and in stand than I have so far this year. LOTS of does. 5 doe near stand late in the evening, still couldn't get a clean shot. This property is neslted inbetween homes etc... really believe that is why we have seen so many deer. I've hunted other parts of the big woods in the wildlife management area's and saw nothing all day. Jersey Backyard Deer, there smart buggers for sure! __________________ UBNJ Sussex County Rep

hey jr that doe is sticking her tongue out at you![]() ![]() .I use to hunt zone 2 and 4 and have noticed a big difference in deer herds.I think the bears and coyotes have alot to do with numbers being down.I think they are killing off alot of the fawns when they are being born. Also the accessive amounts of doe days dont help either.

I've read many times guys opinions on the coyotes and bears killing off deer (fawns) but at the same time, I have never, nor read anything about guys coming across dead carcuss's from either does / bucks / or fawns? Wouldn't you think if this was the case we would see more evidence throughout the woods? On my property upstate a few years back, we had a good size bobcat that took up residence. For almost two winters we found lots of evidence of him killing turkey, grouse, rabbit and I think even fawns. It was real obvious a predator was in the area. Then just like that his prints disapeared and the mauling stopped. As a matter of fact, I recently found two dead deer near a parking area in the wildlife management area of zone 2. Both had been hit by cars. Curious, I went back 3 times to see what, if any predators would feed on them. Surprisingly enough they were not touched in over 3 weeks other than vultures. Both appeared at different times, but both were very fresh kills when I found them at first. __________________ UBNJ Sussex County Rep

Quote: Notice I said fawns when they are being born and that is late may beggining of June.I dont no about you but I try to stay clear of the woods in those spring and summer months.Do most of my scouting in march and april and then not really back into the woods until a bit before bow season.Zone 4 also has some pretty descent sized bob cat also that may be trimming the herds.I have them on trail cam.

Yeah get your point about May / June fawns. Still kinda surprised I don't see more leftovers while out preseason or season? __________________ UBNJ Sussex County Rep

Spit that out wrong...what I meant was deer kills from coyotes etc from larger deer. Have yet to see one. I have to say though where I'm hunting I've seen lots of little ones with does. __________________ UBNJ Sussex County Rep

I have found bone fragments and skulls occaisionally in zone 3. The weirdest one was a circle of deer fur about 6 feet in diameter, it looked like the deer just exploded and there wasn't a piece of bone or meat anywhere.
I think its a combination of the liberal bag limits on does (all weapons) and predation that's got the numbers down. But all that permit money brings in much needed revenue for F&W so who cares about good management. __________________ Tired of working and having too much money?.....
