As a person who has never hunted for waterfowl what is the significance of a band?

Congrats on the birds, but what makes a banded one better?

gkurilla - A small number of ducks/geese are banded every year by the states where they are caught.  The banding is used in waterfowl studies for migration patterns and population.  When you bag a band, you report it and are sent a certificate with information on where the bird came from and how old it is.  I shot a banded mallard last year that was banded in Stanhope, NJ in 1996 (10 years old) All in all it's basically the trophy of duck hunting.  If you come across a duck hunter with alot of bands you know he has put in his time to get them.
