NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 13 / Bucks Already Shedding Antlers 12/20 (Pics)

I was walking into one of my spots this afternoon to put out some corn. It was late, around 4:15, but I couldn't get there any earlier. As I walk in, I see 5 deer running away. 2 of them were bucks with only half racks. I thought it was strange since I hadn't seen any missing half of their racks this season and I also assumed it would be to early for them to start dropping them. However, when I got to the area where I bait, I found this antler laying on the corn I already had out. Presumably from one of the bucks I saw a minute earlier. It must have just fell off. He's a young buck, but he's half of a ten already. (Barely) Enjoy the pictures and let me know what you guys think.

Here is what I think....and what I think is probably limited to my hunting area...but take it for what its worth.

Last year the deer really held their racks for a long time.  I also observed limited "hard" rutting activity last year.  Maybe that caused deer to hold their racks longer because they retained a higher than normal testosterone levels?

This year I saw a ton of really hard chasing and rutting.  Also, I noticed major chasing during the "secondary rut" right around the start of 6-day.  Maybe the bucks ran themselves ragged leaving them with depleted testosterone levels by this time of year?  Maybe this has caused some bucks to shed earlier that would be expected?

Nice shed. Always fun to find a shed, but you would like to see them hold until after the season. My uncle killed a 9pt a few years ago. When he started to track he found both sides had fell off.

Nice shed.
Just like fawns hitting the ground, the rut and many other things asociated with nature and photoperiodism things happen along a "Bell curve" like path with the bulk happening when "Things are best to do so" but there are also groups that experaince the same event at earlier and later times so Mother nature can cover her bets so to speak.

OBTW while having coffee and watching the birds this morning I saw 2 young bucks 4 point and 6 points that had both sides. IMO ANY time after Mid Nov. and before the end of March is the "Right Time" for a buck to shed, it just might not be the right time for each of us.

Be careful shooting "Doe's" the rest of this season.

You may end up killing next years monster.

Looks like you can go hunting every day for the rest of the month, since you have nothing scheduled on your calander.

nice pics

chrism u are exactly correct. i have studied deer for many years and every year is different as well as zones. heavy doe areas with a less buck ratio leads to more breeding activity per one buck which creates a drop in testosterone levels followed by antler loss.

hendryhill - I think stillwaterhunter is talking about the 1st pic you posted with the shed laying on a calander.

Thanks for posting. Great pics of the buck with only 1 antler

There is still hope....I saw three decent bucks this morning on the drive in to work with both antlers.

Anyone going out with Doe permits make sure your aiming it Does if it matters to you. You dont want to be shooting a mature Buck with no antlers which could be next years trophy buck for ya.
Posted:  26 Dec 2007 12:53 PM
he will be a shooter buck next year for ya, hopefull he will make it through
