A little off topic, but an interesting history lesson on the property. My folks live right down the road in Mt. Arlington, my Dad said he was told by someone at the city the place is filled with old toxic waste. Probably some nice 2 headed deer running around in there though.

On my way to make a bowl of popcorn... Anyone care to rip the scab off, stir the pot, and give us NJH newbies an overview on this one.

It's not being hunted (legally) any more.  Cleanup is nearing completion and will be put on the market in the next couple years.

Joe,

Last time I talked to the guards, cleanup was complete and they are ready to sell. They want a LOT of money though. No surprise of course...it is a lot of land.

Maybe if we all chip in a hundred....thousand a piece.

Pakman...its a neat place. Kind of looks like a warzone inside with all the huge rubble piles. Awesome deer habitat...Actually looks a lot different from the inside then the impression you get from the perimeter of the fence. Check out aerial maps and you'll see what I mean. Lots of great funnels and open areas. Lots of deer too...seemed like there were more bucks than does to me....I had a tough time getting a shot at my EAB in there. Had to pass so many big bucks I wanted to slit my wrists! LOL....

Definitely some BIG bucks though, good LORD... I also live right nearby and was lucky enough to hunt it last year. Some of the most fun I've ever had. Not sure if it was because of the bucks or all the great guys I got to hunt with. I guess since I ended up passing a lot of bucks, and going home empty handed, it was all the great guys.

As bloodtrails mentioned, no one is allowed to legally hunt it now. Though I've heard rumors of people sneaking in since I was in HS.

I doubt it...But if you swing by the guard shack, and ask, they may let you in or give you a tour.

I want to ask about shed hunting there...

Those tree branches the bucks call antlers should be easy to find!

Matty, where is the entrance?  Near route 80 side? Or on the other side?

if its up for sale, do u think i could take my mom (who's a real estate agent) and take a "tour" of the property after the antlers drop and before green up?

I saw a monster going to Ramseys a few weeks ago. Counted 14 points and the rack was really dark and old. My wife said it was the biggest deer she ever saw in real life(tv excluded)..
One time I saw 5 or 6 like that just standing by the fence. My dad and I walked up to the fence and just watched them. It was amazing!

I thought that was a utility shed or something.  I know where you mean.  Ive also stood by the fence and seen monster Gobblers just hanging out.

You would be amazed on how alert and smart those deer are.  In the parking lots you could practically walk right up to them but once they hit the fields and woods they are ultra alert.  Spookiest deer I've ever hunted.  Maybe because they are so old.  The big bucks in there are almost untouchable.

That is because the past explosions have made them a little jumpy
Shame the place closed though. Although if you ask my father in law, his dad was killed there in the late 30's or early 40's. He was ten there were 3 kids and dupont gave his mom a very small amount of money for the mishap. I forget the exact amount, but I remember being amazed.

You got that right, lots of nice gobblers in there too...

Bloodtrails is right, the deer may seem tame near parking lots or whatnot, but they are every bit as smart as a heavily pressured public land deer. Smarter probably...

Of course unless you dont have your EAB doe...Then the big bucks parade by you, licking themselves, munching on acorns, offering 8 yard quartering away shots, etc.

Any of you guys ever see "Bullwinkle"?

I saw him a couple times last year (didnt have a doe). I've also seen him in years previous before I hunted there, spotlighting, or just driving by. You cant miss him when you see him...

Last year he was just an ape of a buck. Mass throughout...Symetrical 10 point rack...width, height....He had it all...deer of a lifetime for NJ. Buck of a lifetime in a lot of states actually. I had to pass him and some other slammers before I got a doe...I think another guy had to do the same...We guessed him at 160" about...But I think he was bigger in years previous, plus the size of his body made it hard to judge the rack. The body was huge, but looked normal compared to the rack.

Last time I saw him with antlers was late November of last year, spotlighting on Howard Blvd. He was with a group of does, but he was dogging the one. God he dwarfed all the deer around him. I havent seen him this year. Maybe he died of old age during the winter?   Ive seen him as far outside the fence as the small woodlot behind the St. Theresa Church, during the rut. But he was no where to be seen this year.

I wish everyone could have the opportunity to hunt in there...If you've lived by it long enough, you know about all the big deer, and the past explosions, and people that sneak in, etc....To actually go in there was like a dream.

I only got to hunt it one season, limited days, but its some of the best times I ever had. Great people, big bucks, cant be beat.

Pakman, email me if they let you in to do any shed hunting or anything. I'd love to go around the property with you if they'd allow.

If it's going on the Market-maybe we should start writing to our Stae rep's and Senators and add it to the WMA system-a little grease here and there can do wonders

Yeah! lol    It would be great if they made it public hunting land!  Except after the first year or two... all the deer and bigones would be gone!
