I hunted Black River a few years ago. I started there in the late 1980s and some of the 90s. It's a good place to bow hunt as there aren't that many bow hunters as there are shotgunners. Plus, there are several different access points and parking places at Black River.
Come 6 day fire arm and some of the doe only days, it gets hunted pretty hard. Plus, you have the small game hunters. I will share with you what I have learned... 1. If your schedule permits, try some permit hunting during the week if you don't have school or work. I have found that the weekdays are better than Saturdays and sometimes you will have th eplace to yourself (depending on when they stock pheasants). 2. If you hunt Saturdays, hunt from 1-2PM until dusk. I've had better luck in the afternoons than in the mornings. 3. If you are young, hike deep into the woods. You won't run into any pheasant hunters in the deep woods. They all tend to remain in the hedgerows and fields. 4. Be careful of your location and know your boundaries, but find some spots along the edges of the WMA. You will find more deer along the edges of Black River moving from private property to just inside the WMA hunting lands. But, be careful you are on WMA land and not within 450' of a private home or shed. Hope this helps you. I enjoyed some fine days hutning in there in the 1990s when I was out of work and chose to hunt during the week. I had most of that WMA to myself and it was great. But, you won't find herds of deer. Mostly singles walking or maybe a herd of 3 at the most. If you get a deer out of there, it's an accomplishment. |

Black River is hit very hard all season. I know some locals who drive it every week and have pulled some nice bucks out of there. I also know some guys who have bagged deer within 200 yards from the parking lot on Pleasant Hill Rd. I pheasant hunt almost every part of the WMA and have seen some good deer sign... especially back in the swamp. I have had little luck when deer hunting there though and have seen more bears than deer ![]() __________________ Dog's on point... get ready!!!

My advice is wait until January 5th, since permit shotgun is closed until then!
I didn't realize this until Friday afternoon...last day was Friday until January 5th. Sucks, I was vamped to go on Saturday with the H&R! Went bowhunting instead. Good luck when you go! |
