Zone 5 public deer hunting lands:

Beaver Brook WMA, Columbia Lake WMA, Honey Run WMA, Jenny Jump SF, Paulinskill WMA, Swartswood SP, Trout Brook WMA, White Lake WMA, Whittingham WMA

The only one I'm really familiar with is Whittingham WMA. Nice property, definitely some deer around there. I've also trout fished one portion of the Paulinskill WMA and I think I helped do bear research in Columbia Lake WMA also.

Thats about the best I can do to help you.

Good luck to your buddy and tell him THANKS for serving his country.

Just his firearm hunting license and a zone 5 shotgun deer permit.

(not sure if bucks are fair game, as I only bowhunt, I'm almost certain they are.... if they are, he'll also need to purchase a $28 buck tag if he wishes to harvest a buck. Once a zone permit is purchased, he wont be able to purchase that, so make sure to purchase it with the zone 5 permit)

Better check on getting the permits or it might be too late. I think the deadline is tonight at 11:59 or something like that.

you can buy your permits when ever you want. You cant buy your buck tag after tonight if you have already purchased shotgun zone specified permit.  You can buy the whole deal up the last day as long as you have not purchased the zone specific permit already...

Dirt, if it falls through with the drive (which I'm sure it won't) or if you just want another zone 5 spot for your buddy you can PM me.  I have some access to private land that borders some state land that nobody really knows about.  Let me know.
