NJ Hunter / New Jersey Deer, Bear & Turkey Hunting / Deer Action / Deer Zone 2 / How Many Deer Do You Walk By?

I would not have believed it if I didnt see it with my own eyes.

My Dad takes a stand at 7 am Monday morning. Concerned he is too close to a road (the usual harassment passing cars beeping) he moves about 30 feet to get behind a large oak tree. He stands until 8:30am and decides to venture over to another spot as he hasnt seen a hair.  He takes two steps out from behind a tree and a rather large buck gets up from 30 feet away, takes two jumps towards the road, crosses it and is gone.  He called me later in the morning to come take a look at the tracks.  He passed within 10 feet of the deers bed going into his stand. The big oak was between him and the deer and the road. My Dad was laughing, he stood next to a shooter for 1.5 hours looking for a deer. The snow revealed the buck was beded there when he went in, it didnt sneak in on him.

How many deer do we simply walk by and they stay bedded all day?

I guess more than we could ever imagine.

I remember muzzleloader hunting with my dad in the pines. We walked a deer trail in the back of a field and were talking real soft to each other. He bent down to pick some kind of leaf from the ground that smelled good and as soon as he broke it and gave it to me 5 ft away from us busts this big doe. Go figure

Wasn't there a famous telemetry study where a buck was bedded and motionless and a half dozen hunters walked right by, very close?  Does make you wonder.

Bedded deer remind me of pheasants in thier behavior. they'll let you walk right on by real close and not jump up until you damn near step on them. They should really be holding tight in this extreme wind.

2 years ago i was hunting with one of my friends on the newark watershed property and we were to meet at 12pm to try another spot. well after meeting at the spot we sat talked and unloaded the guns and ate lunch about 12 feet away from 2 bucks. we had to be there for at least a half an hour talking and making noise. they were bedded pretty much right on the trail. the junped up about 4 feet in front of us just as we were walking out. its insane. then after i told my father he said thats happened like 3 times to him before. he has always told my the best chance at getting a good buck is to sit and wait for the deer to move.

That's funny, but sucks at the same time.

best way to find a buck is to call it quits, unload, and walk back to the truck

The good news is the big 8 pnt ran onto private property where there is very little hunting pressure, no shots fired so he's still alive. Question is will he return to our woods??? He was spooked as bad as my Dad, both got surprised.

There have been a number of similar studies that all showed the same thing.  Deer hide and let hunters walk by really close.  You think the woods are empty but there are deer lying still watching you all the time.  They prefer to know where you are and will follow you instead of running away more times than not.
