I'm from the north zone. So I can't help w/ a spot. But Be safe. Waterfowl hunting in winter is dangerous in a canoe. Be careful.

Kinda later for teal. Most teal left the north & coastal zone about 10-14 days ago. Seen a few last week but none since.

njplotts- i was wondering if you are still making calls because i think im interested in both a duck and goose call. also, i was wondering where you buy your block wood from?

Yup still makeing calls. I cut most of my own wood green. A few tree companies save burls & crotch section of certain tree for me. I also swap with other callmakers across the country for their local wood. Exotic woods I get from a friend who imports. Another source of wood is friends that travel outside the US. You can find mandrels, soundboard jigs, expanding chucks, reed materials, wood blanks, etc on the net. Sorry to say there's no one stop shopping place for callmakers.
What kind of wood are you looking for? I have alot of blanks. Starting out I'd go with walnut. It works easy, sounds & looks good plus it's cheap ($8-$12 for a 12" plain blank) compared the others.

well im not looking for anything fancy regarding duck or goose calls, as long as they get the job done.  As for blanks i was thinking about giving decoy carving a whirl. it will probably end in catastrophe, but it cant hurt to try. i dont exactly have the tools or green wood to create my own blocks tho

Decoy wood. you want white cedar or a clear pine. I get my wood from tree companies that remove white cedar from homes. Or cut white pine myself. There's a few mills in S.J. that have permits to log cedar. good cedar is around $4 bdft.. You need 6 bdft per decoy. If  you go with cork you have to buy a case (3 sht. 4"x24") around 125.00 with shipping. If you know anyone going to New England mills  up there have cedar for the boat builders. The paints you can get locally.
Decoy carving takes some time each decoy will be better then the last. Get started! you'll be hooked & cranking out bags of gunning blocks in a year. There's nothing like having ducks lock up on the decoys YOU made from a block of wood.

my thoughts exactly.  same goes for handmade calls, but like i said i dont exactly have the right tools.  what do i have to do to lay my hands on one or two of your calls?

you could get away with wood blank, drill & a carving knife I guess by that the OLDEST way.
Hare's what I use start to finish. Wood blank, chop saw ( cut to length) drill press, lathe with either a jaw chuck or expanding mandrel ( depending if i'm turning a keg or barrel), Kegs are drilled out on the lathe. soundboard jig, a scroll saw to cut the soundboard, then on to cutting reeds & tuning, apply the finish
